Easy Baked Apples
Description
Easy Baked Apples are made by slicing and coring baking apples such as Honeycrisp, which hold their shape well when cooked. The filling combines chopped pecans, real maple syrup, brown sugar, and apple pie spice, mixed with melted salted butter to provide richness and spice. After stuffing the apple halves, a cornstarch slurry is poured around them in the baking dish to thicken the juices that release during baking.
Baking at 350°F with foil cover initially steams the apples, making them tender, then uncovering allows the filling to brown and thicken, occasionally basting the apples with the pan juices. This results in soft, flavorful apples with a mildly crunchy nut filling enhanced by warm spices and sweet syrup.
This dessert can serve as a comforting treat after meals, particularly in cooler months, and pairs well with cream or vanilla ice cream. Variations can be made by substituting nuts or sweeteners as noted in the recipe.
The notes advise using cool tap water with the cornstarch to prevent lumps and offer alternatives like walnuts or oats for the filling. Use salted butter or add salt if using unsalted butter for balanced flavor. Nutritional estimates are provided but may vary based on ingredient choices.
Ingredients
- 5 apple like Honeycrisp, baking
- 2/3 cup water cool
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 1 cup pecans chopped
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup real
- 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
- 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
- 5 tablespoons butter melted, salted
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350F.
- Add the filling ingredients to a medium bowl.
- Stir together.
- Chill until ready to use.
- Slice the apples in half.
- Scoop out the core.
- Place the apple halves in a 9x13-inch dish.
- Fill the center of the apples with the filling.
- In a separate small dish, stir together the cornstarch and cool water.
- Pour the cornstarch mixture around the apples into the bottom of the pan.
- Cover the pan tightly with foil.
- Bake for 20 minutes.
- Uncover and continue baking for about 20 additional minutes. I like to baste the apples with the sauce during the last 5 minutes of baking.
- Let the apples sit for 5-10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Choose firm baking apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith to maintain shape during baking.
- You can substitute pecans with walnuts or omit nuts for a nut-free version using oats instead.
- Maple syrup adds distinct sweetness; honey is an acceptable alternative.
- If using unsalted butter, add a pinch of salt to enhance flavor balance.
- Chilling the filling before use helps combine flavors and ease filling the apples.
