Easy Baked Apples

Easy Baked Apples feature peeled and cored apple chunks coated in a mixture of brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch. Cubes of butter are spread on top before baking covered with foil until tender. The baked apples are soft, warmly spiced, and can be served hot, often complemented by ice cream or caramel sauce.

Description

This recipe prepares apples by peeling, coring, and cutting them into uniform chunks. The apple pieces are tossed with brown sugar, fresh lemon juice to maintain brightness, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch to thicken juices released during baking. The mixture spreads evenly in a greased baking dish, topped with cold butter cubes to add richness and encourage caramelization.

The dish is covered with foil and baked at 400°F for 35 to 40 minutes, which softens the apples to a tender texture while melding the warm spices into the fruit. Stirring after baking helps distribute the buttery sauce. These baked apples can be enjoyed on their own or as a warm accompaniment served with ice cream and caramel sauce for a comforting dessert.

The recipe adapts well to various apple varieties; Honeycrisp is used here for its balance of sweetness and tartness. The simple preparation makes it approachable for casual desserts or a seasonal treat.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Grease a medium-sized baking dish and set aside.
  2. Cut the apples into ½ inch chunks. In a small bowl, combine the apples, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch. Stir until all ingredients are well combined and apples are evenly coated.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish. Spread the butter cubes over the top of the apples and cover the dish with foil.
  4. Bake in preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until apples are tender. Remove from oven and stir. Serve hot with ice cream and caramel sauce if desired. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use a variety like Honeycrisp for a balance of sweet and tart flavors in baked apples.
  • Serving the baked apples warm alongside ice cream and caramel sauce enhances the dessert experience.
