Easy Baked Halibut

This baked halibut recipe features fillets topped with a flavorful mayonnaise mixture including shallot, lemon, herbs, and mustard then baked until flaky with a golden broiled finish. It delivers a moist fish with a tangy, herby crust.

Description

Easy Baked Halibut prepares firm halibut fillets coated with a mixture of mayonnaise, finely diced shallot, fresh lemon juice, parsley, chives, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. The coating adds moisture and tang while baking the fish evenly at 400°F. The final step uses the broiler briefly to brown and crisp the topping, creating an attractive golden crust.

The result is tender, flaky halibut with a moist interior that contrasts with the lightly crisped top. The herbs and lemon brighten the rich mayonnaise, balancing the fish's natural subtle flavor. This method requires watching closely to avoid overcooking while allowing the mayo topping to brown nicely.

This fish is served simply, garnished with fresh chives from the recipe. It pairs well with light sides like steamed vegetables or a fresh salad.

Ingredients

Servings
  • cup mayonnaise
  • 1 shallot finely diced
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon parsley finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons chives finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 4 halibut fillets

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400F. In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, shallot, lemon juice, parsley, one tablespoon of chives (save the remaining for garnish), mustard, salt and pepper.
  2. Lightly coat the inside of the baking dish with oil or butter (to prevent the halibut from sticking). Place the halibut filets in the baking dish. Then evenly spoon your mayonnaise mixture onto the top of the halibut filets.
  3. Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes minutes being careful not to overcook. Just before the fish is done, turn on the top broiler of your oven for 1-2 minutes to make the top golden. The fish is done when it becomes opaque and flakes easily.
  4. Remove the halibut from the oven and sprinkle the remaining chives on top before serving.
