Easy Beef and Broccoli Stir Fry

Easy Beef and Broccoli Stir Fry pairs thinly sliced flank steak with crisp broccoli florets coated in a savory sauce made from soy, honey, garlic, ginger, and a hint of heat from red pepper flakes and Sriracha. The beef is quickly seared and combined with the broccoli, resulting in a stir fry that balances tender meat with a vibrant vegetable crunch. The sauce thickens rapidly due to cornstarch, creating a glossy finish.

Description

This Easy Beef and Broccoli Stir Fry integrates flank steak cut thin against the grain with broccoli florets in a sauce rich with soy sauce, honey, garlic, ginger, and a touch of spice from red pepper flakes and Sriracha. Cornstarch in the sauce thickens it quickly as it cooks, coating the ingredients evenly. The beef is seared on fairly high heat to develop a slight browning, while the broccoli remains slightly crisp unless covered to steam longer.

The contrast between the tender, juicy beef and the vibrant, crunchy broccoli creates a satisfying texture combination. The sweet and savory sauce with a spicy undertone highlights the flavors without overpowering the fresh ingredients. This stir fry is typically served over rice or noodles.

For better slicing, partially freezing the beef before cutting helps achieve thin pieces. Avoid overcrowding the pan to ensure proper searing. Adjust the cooking time slightly based on preferred broccoli tenderness.

Ingredients

Servings

Sauce

  • ½ cup soy sauce low sodium
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 3 tablespoons cooking wine such as Shaoxing
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon ginger minced, fresh
  • 2 tablespoon sesame oil
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 tablespoon Sriracha sauce or to taste
  • ½ cup beef broth or chicken broth, low sodium or no sodium

Beef and Broccoli

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound flank steak trimmed of fat and sliced thin against the grain
  • 1 head broccoli cut into small florets

Instructions

  1. Prepare the beef: Cut the beef in really thin pieces. I find it easier sometimes if the meat is a bit frozen it's way easier to slice it thin. To do this place the beef in the freezer for 20 minutes before slicing it.
  2. Make the sauce and cook the beef: Mix all the sauce ingredients together. Sear the beef for about 3 to 4 minutes over medium-high heat in a little bit of olive oil, just until it starts to brown then you add that yummy sauce. You should see it start to thicken almost immediately from the cornstarch. If you don't like or want to use cornstarch, you could use flour instead.
  3. Finish the stir fry: Add the broccoli florets and cook everything for another 2 minutes, or until the broccoli is tender. I like a little bit of crunch left in my broccoli. If you want it more tender, cover the pan with a lid and let everything steam together.
  4. Serve: Serve over rice or noodles.

Notes

  • Partially freeze steak for easier thin slicing against the grain.
  • Use a hot skillet and do not stir beef immediately to allow searing.
  • Cook beef in batches if needed to avoid overcrowding and steaming.
  • Cover pan briefly to steam broccoli if a softer texture is preferred.
  • Sherry can be substituted with apple cider if desired.
