Easy Caramel Apples Recipe

These Easy Caramel Apples are crisp apples coated with smooth, melted caramel made from sweetened caramels and cream, offering a classic combination of tart and sweet. After removing any wax from store-bought apples and drying them thoroughly, the apples are skewered and dipped in warm caramel. Optional toppings like chopped nuts, sprinkles, or crushed cookies add texture and flavor. Refrigerating the apples before dipping helps the caramel set faster, making them ideal for a festive treat or party snack.

Description

This caramel apples recipe centers on dipping thoroughly dried, skewered apples into a warm caramel mixture made from melting caramel squares with heavy cream and a pinch of salt. Removing the wax from store-bought apples by dipping briefly in hot water and drying well ensures the caramel adheres properly. The caramel is coated over the apples to just below the top to maintain apple visibility and prevent excess caramel pooling. Optional toppings such as chopped pecans, sprinkles, or crushed Oreo cookies can be added promptly before the caramel sets. Refrigeration after dipping allows the caramel to harden evenly. This recipe results in a chewy, sweet caramel layer contrasting the fresh tartness and crispness of the apples.

Ingredients

Servings

For the Caramel Apples:

  • 10 apple or use 8-10 apples depending on size
  • 10 skewers for apples
  • 22 oz caramel from two 11 oz bags, unwrapped
  • 4 Tbsp heavy whipping cream
  • Pinch salt

Optional Toppings:

  • pecans chopped
  • Sprinkles
  • mini M&M’s candy
  • coconut shredded
  • Oreo cookies crushed
  • chocolate melted for drizzling
  • pretzels crushed
  • peanut chopped

Instructions

  1. If using store-bought apples, you should remove the wax coating first. Dip apples in hot water for a few seconds then rub them with a towel to remove wax. Dry the Apples really well. Remove stems and Insert Sticks into the top of the apples. Tip: refrigerating apples will help the caramel set faster while you prep toppings and melt caramel.
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone liner. Prepare toppings so they are ready to use.
  3. Heat caramel, cream and a pinch of salt over a double boiler or microwave for a few minutes stirring every 30 seconds until caramel is melted and smooth.
  4. Roll apples in caramel, dipping apples sideways to coat almost to the top. We like to leave a little bit of Apple showing on top so you can see what kind of Apple you’re picking. Allow excess to drip back into the bowl. Scrape off the bottom of the Apple against the side of the bowl so you don’t get too much caramel pooling at the bottom
  5. If you see a lot of air bubbles in your caramel start to form or if it gets too thick, then rewarm it slightly. If caramel so too runny, let it cool slightly before using.
  6. Immediately after dipping in caramel, roll apples into your toppings or leave them plain if desired. Refrigerate at least 15 minutes or until caramel is set before drizzling with melted chocolate and enjoying.

Notes

  • Remove wax from store-bought apples by dipping in hot water briefly, then dry completely before dipping.
  • Refrigerate skewered apples prior to dipping to help caramel set faster.
  • Prepare and have toppings ready before rolling apples to coat quickly before caramel firms.
  • To avoid caramel pooling on the bottom, scrape excess caramel off the bottom edge after dipping.
  • Store cooled caramel apples in airtight containers or individually wrapped in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • After refrigerating the dipped apples for 15 minutes, add melted chocolate drizzle if desired.
