Instructions

  1. Prep: Preheat oven to 350 degrees and prep apples by washing, peeling, and slicing them.
  2. Prep Topping: Add topping ingredients except oats and butter to a medium sized bowl and mix well. Add cubed cool butter and cut into the flour and sugar until a crumbly mixture is formed. Fold in oats.
  3. Cook Apples: Heat and melt butter in cast iron over medium-low heat. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix the sugar, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and salt. Add the spices to the butter and mix well. Then add apples and coat with the spiced butter. Cook for 5 minutes until the apples begin to soften. Add lemon juice and mix.
  4. Add Topping: Sprinkle the flour oat topping over the apples in an even layer.
  5. Bake: Place in center rack in oven and bake for 40-45 minutes.
  6. Serve and Enjoy with vanilla ice cream or caramel sauce!

  • Fridge: Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days.
  • Freezer: You can store a fully baked crisp in the freezer for up to 3 months. To reheat, remove from the freezer, let thaw overnight in the fridge, and then bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 20-25 mins.
  • Substitutions
  • Substitutions
  • Apples: Use apples that are on the more tart side like granny smith or honey crisp.
  • Flour: You can make this gluten-free by using your favorite gluten-free flour.
  • Butter: You can use salted butter, too and then just omit the salt.
  • Baking in a Baking Dish

  • We love to use our cast iron skillet for this, but you can also use a 9X9 or similarly sized baking dish or a pie dish. Grease the bottom of the dish you use, you may not need a full 2 tablespoons of melted butter to do this, but it won't hurt the flavor to use it! ;)

  • Add brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg to a small container.  Prep apples and add them to a large bowl and add 1/4 lemon juice and cover apples in bowl with water and cover.  Add oats, flour, cinnamon, and salt to a medium bowl and cover.  Drain apples before using. Cook apples while you're prepping your dinner, and then put it all in the oven when you sit down for dinner so that it's ready when you're ready!
  • Peeled or Unpeeled Apples

  • If you choose not to peel apples, just make sure that you cook the apples in the cast iron until they are soft, which may take a little bit longer.
