Easy Cast Iron Apple Crisp
Description
Easy Cast Iron Apple Crisp uses peeled and sliced apples coated in a blend of butter, brown sugar, and warming spices such as cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. The apples are gently cooked in a cast iron skillet to soften and infuse them with spice before a crumbly topping of oats, flour, butter, and sugar is sprinkled evenly above. Baking the crisp in the oven allows the topping to become golden and crunchy while the apples finish cooking beneath.
The texture balances soft, tender fruit with a slightly crispy oat topping. The spices add aromatic complexity without overwhelming the apple’s natural flavor. This rustic dessert is well suited for cooler weather and can be served warm, especially alongside ice cream or a drizzle of caramel.
The use of a cast iron skillet promotes even baking and highlights caramelized edges. The recipe suggests tart apple varieties for balance. Leftovers keep well refrigerated up to four days and a fully baked crisp freezes for up to three months. Reheating in the oven maintains the topping’s texture better than microwaving. Prep can be partly done ahead, including mixing dry topping ingredients and soaking apples in lemon water to prevent browning.

- Choose tart apple varieties like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp to balance sweetness and provide structure.
- The cast iron skillet can be replaced with a 9x9 baking dish; grease the dish well to prevent sticking.
