Easy Cinnamon Apples
Description
This recipe uses thick apple slices that are cooked in butter along with brown sugar and a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger powders to develop a fragrant, sweet-spiced flavor. The apples are first tossed in lemon juice and salt to maintain color and enhance flavor. Cooking over medium-low heat under a lid steams and softens the apples while keeping some texture.
After simmering briefly, the lid is removed to reduce moisture and the apples are tossed to coat evenly. Adding a cornstarch slurry at the end helps thicken the cooking juices into a glaze. The result is tender apple slices with a gently spiced, glossy coating.
The apples can be served warm as a dessert topping, over pancakes, or alongside savory dishes. The notes caution against cutting apples too thin to avoid mushiness, suggest optional use of arrowroot as a thickener, and mention the possibility of adding brandy for an adult variation.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoon butter
- 4 apple peeled, cored and sliced into 8 thick slices
- ½ cup light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder
- ½ teaspoon ground ginger
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg powder
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon corn starch
- 1 teaspoon water optional
Instructions
- Wash apples well, pat dry in a kitchen towel.
- It’s a personal choice to peel the skin or leave the skin on. If you are feeding kids, it’s best to peel the skin and chop it into smaller pieces to make it easy for them to eat. I prefer to peel the skin.
- Cut 8 equal-sized slices from each apple.
- Add lemon juice and salt and toss well to coat. This will prevent apples from browning.
- Melt butter in a skillet, and add apple slices to the pan.
- Add all ingredients – brown sugar, cinnamon powder, nutmeg powder, ginger powder.
- Allow apple slices to cook for a minute. Cover with a lid and simmer on medium-low heat for about 4 minutes.
- Remove lid and toss well.
- Adding cornstarch is optional. Arrowroot powder can also be used in place of corn starch for thickening.
- Mix corn starch in 1 tablespoon water making sure no lumps are left. Pour it over sautéed apples.
- Alternatively, directly sprinkle corn starch over the apples. Stir and cook for 2 minutes until the sauce begins to thicken.
- Remove from heat.
- Note: at this stage, you can add flavors to your dish like vanilla extract or maple syrup.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
- Cut apples into thick, evenly sized slices to ensure even cooking without breaking or mushiness.
- Peeling apples is optional, but peeled apples are easier for children to eat.
- Cook apples gently and do not over-stir to maintain texture with a slight crunch.
- Adding a cornstarch or arrowroot slurry thickens the juices into a glaze; this step is optional.
- For an adult version, consider adding brandy at the end of cooking for added flavor.
