Easy Country-Style Pork Ribs in the Oven
Description
Easy Country-Style Pork Ribs in the Oven relies on a two-step cooking method to tenderize and flavor the ribs. Initially, the ribs are salted and peppered, then slow-baked under foil at a low temperature to allow the meat to become tender without drying out. After this initial phase, the ribs are brushed liberally with barbecue sauce and returned to the oven to cook uncovered, which creates a sticky, caramelized coating on the fatty, meaty ribs. This process enhances texture by maintaining moisture inside while developing a saucy, flavorful exterior.
The flavor profile comes primarily from the barbecue sauce added later and the seasoning with salt and black pepper. The method avoids complex marinades or rubs, focusing instead on the natural pork flavors combined with a smoky, sweet finish from the sauce. This recipe is well-suited for cooks who prefer oven cooking over grilling or smoking.
Serving these ribs right after a five-minute resting period helps retain juiciness. The ribs can be paired with classic sides like coleslaw or baked beans for a traditional meal. Adjustments for larger ribs include increasing covered cooking time to ensure tenderness. Additionally, trimming thick fat caps before cooking can reduce excess grease.
Overall, this approach offers a straightforward way to cook country-style ribs with attention to tenderness and sauce application, making it accessible for home cooks equipped with a roasting pan and oven.
Ingredients
Special Equipment
- Foil
- Roasting pan or rimmed baking sheet
- Silicone basting brush optional
Country-style Ribs
- pork ribs country-style
- salt
- black pepper
- barbecue sauce your favorite
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 300°F. Salt and pepper both sides of your ribs and place in a single layer in your pan, fattier side up.
- Cover the pan tightly with foil and bake for 2 hours. Carefully (steam and liquid in the tray will be hot!) remove ribs from the oven and check the meat. They should be starting to become tender. If they still feel tough, re-cover them and place them back in the oven for 15 to 30 minutes.
- Transfer ribs to a plate and drain liquid from the pan. Return ribs to tray and brush with a generous coating of BBQ sauce.
- Turn oven down to 275°F and bake ribs, uncovered, for 1 hour more, or until you can pull the meat apart with a fork (if your ribs were small and already pretty tender when you put them back in the oven, start checking after 20 minutes). Brush with another coat of BBQ sauce, rest for 5 minutes, serve and enjoy!
Notes
- If your ribs weigh 10 ounces or more, increase the initial covered baking time by 30 minutes to ensure tenderness.
- Remove thick fat caps from ribs before cooking to reduce excess grease if desired.
- The nutritional information approximates a serving of 6 ounces of cooked meat with 2 tablespoons of barbecue sauce.
