Easy Fried Cabbage

Easy Fried Cabbage combines crisp, smoky bacon with sautéed onions, garlic, and cabbage seasoned with mustard and smoked paprika. The cabbage is cooked until tender and slightly caramelized, offering a mellow and flavorful vegetable side dish with a savory depth from the bacon and spices.

Description

The recipe starts by frying bite-sized bacon pieces in a pan until crisp, then removing them and leaving about two tablespoons of bacon fat for sautéing onions. The onion softens and becomes translucent before minced garlic, stone ground or Dijon mustard, and smoked paprika are stirred in for flavor. Sliced cabbage is then added and cooked with the spices, salt, and pepper until it reaches a buttery soft texture with slight caramelization. The crispy bacon is stirred back in at the end, blending its smoky richness throughout the cabbage.

This preparation yields a cabbage side that is richly savory with a balance of softness from slow cooking and a bit of texture from the bacon. It pairs well with a variety of main dishes, particularly those benefiting from smoky undertones and hearty vegetables.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 6 pieces Bacon cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 onion diced, small
  • 3 garlic minced, cloves
  • 2 tablespoons stone ground mustard or Dijon mustard
  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 head cabbage sliced and chopped
  • salt to taste, Kosher salt and freshly ground
  • black pepper to taste, Kosher salt and freshly ground

Instructions

  1. Heat a large pan on medium heat and add the sliced bacon. Cook until crispy, then removed to a paper towel-lined plate. Remove some bacon grease, leaving about 2 tablespoons in the pan.
  2. Add the onion and saute for 2 to 3 minutes, or until it's translucent.
  3. Add the garlic, mustard, smoked paprika, salt and pepper and give it a stir to combine.
  4. Place the sliced cabbage on top and use a large spoon or tongs to stir and saute together for another 12 to 15 minutes. When the cabbage is done it should be buttery soft and slightly caramelized.
  5. Toss the bacon back in, and stir it all together before serving.
