Easy Homemade Cornbread Recipe
Description
This cornbread recipe mixes together dry ingredients—cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt—with wet ingredients including milk, egg, and neutral oil. The batter is stirred gently to keep some lumps, preserving the bread’s texture. It is poured into a greased 9-inch pie plate or similar baking dish and baked at 425ºF for about 20 minutes until the top and edges are golden.
The resulting cornbread offers a pleasant contrast between a crisp exterior and a moist, tender crumb inside. Its mild sweetness and texture make it a versatile accompaniment to a variety of meals such as soups, chili, or barbecue.
Ingredients
- 1 cup cornmeal $0.24, yellow
- 1 cup all-purpose flour $0.15
- 1/4 cup sugar $0.20
- 1 Tbsp baking powder $0.24
- 1/2 tsp salt $0.02
- 1 cup milk $0.31
- 1 egg $0.27, large
- 1/4 cup neutral cooking oil $0.08, generic cooking oil
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425ºF and coat the inside of a 9-inch pie plate, cast iron skillet, or 8x8 casserole dish with non-stick spray (or butter for more flavor).
- In a large bowl, stir together the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and oil.
- Pour the bowl of wet ingredients into the bowl of dry ingredients and stir just until everything is moist. Avoid over stirring. It's okay if there are a few lumps.
- Pour the batter into the prepared dish and bake for about 20 minutes, or until the top and edges are golden brown. Cut into 8 pieces and serve.
