Easy Homemade Frozen Yogurt Recipe
Description
The recipe blends sliced frozen strawberries and bananas with whole-milk Greek yogurt, flavoring extracts, honey, and optionally sugar and corn syrup to create a smooth base. After blending to a creamy consistency, the mixture is chilled by freezing for several hours. The corn syrup and sugar can help prevent ice crystals and improve texture. The final frozen yogurt can be served soft after brief thawing or eaten immediately as a thick smoothie. Its fruity, sweet, and creamy flavor balance appeals as a cool dessert or snack.
Using whole-milk Greek yogurt lends richness and creaminess important for texture. Different frozen fruits can be substituted, though banana provides natural sweetness and stability. The frozen yogurt stores well in a sealed container in the freezer for up to two weeks, best eaten within a few days to maintain optimal texture and flavor.
For extra creaminess, adding heavy cream during blending is possible. Labneh can substitute yogurt for a different tang but may require adjusting sweeteners.
Ingredients
- 4 cups strawberries or other frozen fruit of your choice (see notes, sliced frozen
- 2 cups banana sliced frozen
- 1 cup Greek yogurt whole milk
- 2 tsp orange extract or vanilla extract, if you like
- 4 to 6 tbsp honey more to your liking, I used Greek honey
- 1/4 cup sugar optional but highly recommended
- 1 tbsp corn syrup optional
Instructions
- Combine the frozen strawberries, banana, yogurt, orange extract (or vanilla extract), honey, sugar, and corn syrup in the bowl of a food processor fitted with a blade or a heavy duty blender.
- Blend until everything is combined into a creamy smoothie-like mixture. Taste, and if you like it sweeter add a bit more honey.
- Transfer the mixture to a freezer safe container and smooth the surface. Press a piece of parchment against the top of the yogurt to prevent ice crystals from forming. Freeze for at least 6 hours or overnight.
- To serve, allow the frozen yogurt to sit at room temperature for a few minutes just until soft enough to scoop. Scoop the amount you need (long, shallow pulls or strokes will produce better scoops). Enjoy!
Notes
- Whole-milk Greek yogurt is key for best texture and creaminess in the frozen yogurt.
- Corn syrup and sugar are optional but help achieve a smoother consistency and sweeter taste.
- You can substitute frozen mango, peach, or berries; banana can be omitted depending on the fruit used.
- For a creamier version, blend in 1/4 cup heavy cream with the frozen fruit and yogurt.
- Frozen yogurt can be stored up to 2 weeks in a sealed container but is best consumed within 3 days for flavor and texture.
