Easy Homemade Marinara Sauce

This Easy Homemade Marinara Sauce blends canned San Marzano tomatoes with garlic, onion, and dried herbs like basil, oregano, and thyme for a rich tomato sauce. Simmered gently and finished with balsamic vinegar and optional fresh basil, it offers a balanced, tangy flavor and smooth texture after blending. The sauce's thick yet fresh tomato taste makes it suitable for pasta, pizza, or as a base for other Italian dishes.

Description

Easy Homemade Marinara Sauce relies on quality canned San Marzano tomatoes slow-simmered with sautéed garlic, onion, and tomato paste to build a robust base. Dried herbs such as basil, oregano, and thyme add aromatic depth, while a touch of sugar balances acidity. The balsamic vinegar enriches the complexity of flavors, and blending the sauce creates a smooth, silky consistency. This method results in a traditional yet approachable tomato sauce that can be used for pasta dishes or pizza toppings.

The sauce is cooked over medium-low heat and gently simmered, allowing the flavors to meld without losing brightness. Using an immersion blender lets you control the sauce's texture depending on preference, from chunky to mostly smooth. Fresh basil added at the end adds a fresh herbal note.

This batch makes about 7 cups, suitable for multiple meals, and can be halved or doubled easily. Because it uses staple pantry ingredients and straightforward steps, it provides a practical homemade alternative to store-bought marinara.

Ensure to adjust seasoning at the end, and consider personal preference for blending smoothness. The balance of herbs and acidity makes this sauce a versatile foundation for various Italian-style recipes.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 6 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/3 cup grated or minced yellow onion
  • 2 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 (28 oz each) San Marzano tomato whole peeled, canned
  • 1 Tbsp basil dried
  • 2 tsp oregano dried
  • 1/2 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp thyme dried
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • basil optional, torn or minced, fresh

Instructions

  1. In a large heavy bottomed pot, add olive oil and heat over MED heat.  Once oil is hot, add garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, stirring constantly.
  2. Add grated onion and tomato paste and cook about 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  3. Add tomatoes, basil, oregano, sugar, thyme, salt, pepper and vinegar.  Stir well.
  4. Use a potato masher or wooden spoon to gently break down the whole tomatoes.
  5. Keep cooking until sauce comes to a high simmer, then reduce heat to MED LOW, cover and simmer 20-30 minutes.
  6. Use an immersion blender and blend until somewhat, mostly, or completely smooth.  Alternately, you could transfer the sauce to a traditional blender or food processor.

Notes

  • This recipe yields about 7 cups of marinara sauce, suitable for multiple servings or meals.
  • You can halve or double all ingredients proportionally to adjust the batch size.
  • Use an immersion blender to blend the sauce to your preferred texture, from chunky to smooth.
  • Fresh basil added at the end enhances the sauce’s aroma but is optional.
