Easy Homemade Salted Butterscotch Sauce

This Easy Homemade Salted Butterscotch Sauce combines light or dark brown sugar, heavy cream, butter, salt, and vanilla extract into a smooth, pourable sauce. Cooked gently and stirred during simmering, it thickens as it cools to a glossy, creamy texture with a rich caramel flavor. The sauce complements desserts such as ice cream, pie, or blondies with its sweet and slightly salty notes.

Description

The sauce is made by heating brown sugar with heavy cream, butter, and a pinch of salt in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Once the butter melts and the mixture simmers, it cooks for a few minutes with constant stirring to prevent graininess. After removing from heat, vanilla extract is added to enrich the flavor.

When warm, the sauce is thin and pourable but thickens upon cooling to a creamy consistency. This texture makes it suitable as a topping for various desserts including ice cream, pies, or baked goods like blondies.

For best results, the sauce should be stored refrigerated and gently warmed before serving, avoiding boiling to prevent separation or graininess. Using quality ingredients such as a 40% fat heavy cream influences the sauce’s richness and smoothness.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup light brown sugar or dark brown sugar, packed
  • ¾ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup butter usually salted
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, add the brown sugar, cream, butter, and salt. Cook over medium-low heat until the butter is melted, stirring occasionally. Increase the heat to medium, bring the mixture to a simmer, and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring constantly.
  2. Off the heat, stir in the vanilla. The sauce will be thin but will thicken as it cools.
  3. Pour the sauce into a jar or bowl to cool. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  4. Warm lightly (don't bring to simmer or boil or it can separate or turn grainy) before serving or serve straight from the refrigerator. Serve over ice cream, pie, blondies or whatever treat calls for butterscotch sauce!

Notes

  • Using dark brown sugar produces a darker, deeper-flavored sauce compared to light brown sugar.
  • Choose heavy cream with at least 40% fat content to ensure a rich texture.
  • Warm the sauce gently before serving; avoid boiling to maintain a smooth consistency.
