Easy Irish Coffee Recipe
Description
The Easy Irish Coffee recipe is built on a hot cup of strong coffee mixed with packed brown sugar, which adds sweetness and depth. Irish whiskey is stirred in to give the drink its signature kick and flavor. The crowning touch is a layer of soft whipped cream gently floated on top by spooning it over the back of a spoon, creating a visual and textural contrast.
The whipped cream balances the warmth and slight bitterness of the coffee, contributing an indulgent texture. Optional garnishes like a sprinkle of nutmeg or green sanding sugar can add aroma or subtle sweetness. Variations include using decaf coffee, cold brewed coffee, or adding cream or Irish Cream to adjust richness and taste.
This drink can be served in warmed mugs to maintain temperature longer. The recipe guides on preparing soft whipped cream with sugar and vanilla extract. It's also adaptable for iced versions or substituting Bailey’s Irish Cream liqueur for whiskey to achieve a creamier profile. For homemade whipped cream, chilling the bowl and whisking to soft peaks yields the traditional topping that dissolves slowly into the coffee.
Ingredients
- 7 ounces coffee hot, strong or medium (regular or decaf)
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar packed, light or dark
- 1-1.5 ounces Irish whiskey I used Jameson whiskey
- 1/4 cup Whipped Cream soft whipped
Instructions
- Add hot water to Irish coffee mugs to warm the cups, and let them sit for a minute while you gather the rest of your ingredients. Pour out hot water and add hot coffee and brown sugar to your mug, stirring until the sugar has dissolved.
- Stir in the whiskey. And top with whipped cream; please look at the notes for how to make whipped cream and float it on top of the coffee.
Notes
- Warm the coffee mugs before preparing to help keep the coffee hot longer.
- Float whipped cream gently over coffee by spooning over the back of a spoon for distinct layers.
- For whipped cream, whip cold heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
- Optional garnishes include a dash of nutmeg or green sanding sugar for aroma and color.
- Variations include using cold brew coffee, adding half and half for Irish Cream coffee, or substituting whiskey with Bailey’s Irish Cream liqueur.
- Canned whipped cream can be used, but it tends to melt into the drink faster than homemade whipped cream.
