Easy Korean Beef Rice Bowls

This dish features ground beef cooked with garlic, onion, and a sauce combining hoisin, soy, mirin, and chili oil, creating bold Asian-inspired flavors. Served over jasmine rice and optionally topped with green beans, sesame seeds, and a fried egg, it offers a hearty, savory meal with balanced sweet and spicy notes.

Description

Easy Korean Beef Rice Bowls combine sautéed ground beef with minced garlic, onion, and a flavorful sauce made of hoisin, dark soy sauce, mirin, sesame oil, chili oil, ginger, and a touch of sugar. This mixture simmers until the flavors meld, and green beans may be added for a fresh, crisp texture. Served over steaming jasmine rice, this dish balances sweet, salty, and spicy tastes with tender, browned beef and aromatic ingredients.

The finished bowls can be garnished with sesame seeds, extra chili oil, and optionally a fried egg, adding richness and visual appeal. The recipe is versatile, allowing substitutions in protein, vegetables, or serving style.

Ground pork, chicken, turkey, or plant-based meat alternatives work well. Vegetables like carrots or green onions can replace green beans. For a lower carbohydrate option, wrap the seasoned meat in lettuce cups. If dark soy sauce is unavailable, a bit of gravy browning sauce can deepen the color and flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic minced (I use a garlic press
  • 1/2 onion medium, yellow, minced
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 10 green beans sliced on the diagonal, optional (substitute carrots, green onions, or anything you've got on hand
  • 4 cups jasmine rice hot cooked

sauce

  • 3 Tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 3 Tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp mirin or rice wine or sherry
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil toasted
  • 1 Tbsp Chili oil or chili paste or dried red chili flakes (if you don't have either
  • 1 Tbsp ginger finely grated

serving suggestions, optional

  • sesame seeds
  • Chili oil
  • egg fried

Instructions

  1. Heat a little oil in the bottom of a large skillet over medium to medium high heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until the onion starts to soften. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with the edge of a spatula while it cooks. You want the meat to be as finely broken up as possible, so keep at it.
  2. Whisk together the sauce ingredients, and add to the pan, stirring to combine. Let simmer for a few minutes. Add the green beans and cook for a minute more.
  3. Divide the hot rice between four bowls, and then top with the beef. Garnish with the sesame seeds, chili oil, and fried eggs, if desired. Serve with sriracha sauce.

Notes

  • Substitute ground pork, chicken, turkey, or plant-based meat alternatives for beef.
  • Use carrots, green onions, or other available vegetables in place of green beans.
  • Try serving the meat mixture in lettuce cups for a low-carb option.
  • If you don’t have dark soy sauce, a small amount of kitchen browning sauce can add color.
