Easy Naan Bread (Yeast Free)
Description
This naan bread combines plain flour with plain yogurt, baking powder, and a pinch of sea salt to form a quick dough without the need for yeast or rising. After mixing and brief kneading, the dough is divided into eight pieces and rolled thin. Heating a dry frying pan very hot, each naan is cooked for about two minutes per side until brown spots form and the bread puffs slightly. This method gives a bread with a tender crumb and lightly crisp exterior from the quick, high-heat cooking.
These naan breads can be pulled into traditional teardrop shapes for authenticity but also work well as rounds. The absence of yeast means they are a straightforward, practical option for flatbread to accompany dips, curries, or other dishes where naan is often served.
Maintaining a very hot pan is key to achieving proper puffing and surface charring. The dough's yogurt contributes moisture and tang that balances the bread's simple ingredients.
Ingredients
- 250 g plain flour
- 250 g PLAIN yogurt
- 2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 pinch salt sea salt
Instructions
- Put all the ingredients in to a large mixing bowl.
- Using your hands mix well to form a ball of dough.
- Put on a floured surface and knead for 2 minutes.
- Cut the dough into eight equal pieces and roll out until about 0.5cm/0.25 inch thick. If possible, pull into the traditional "teardrop" shape.
- Heat a dry frying pan over a high heat. Cook each naan bread until charred spots appear and the naan start to puff up - about 2 minutes each side.
Notes
- Knead the dough only briefly after mixing to bring it together before rolling out; lengthy kneading is not necessary.
- Ensure the frying pan is very hot to help the bread cook quickly and puff up properly.
- If you don’t have a rolling pin, a wine bottle can be used to roll the dough.
