Instructions

  1. Blend together sweetened condensed milk, heavy whipping cream, and thawed frozen passion fruit pulp in a blender until creamy and thick, about 1 minute.
  2. Pour mixture into ramekins, then cover them and refrigerate for at least 2 hours until the mousse is cold and set. Serve by itself, topped with berries, or with a coulis on top.
  3. (OPTIONAL) Meanwhile, you can prepare the passion fruit coulis, if desired. To do this, stir ½ cup of the thawed passion fruit pulp, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and the pulp of one passion fruit in a small saucepan.
  4. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring often, for about 8-10 minutes or until syrupy. Let cool at room temp, cover, and refrigerate to serve on top of the passion fruit mousse.

Notes

  • CALORIES: Nutrition facts don't include the calories for the coulis!
  • PASSION FRUIT PULP/JUICE: You may use this frozen passion fruit pulp which is also available in-store at Walmart and Target (in the freezer aisle). Or you can use a passion fruit juice concentrate which is also available at Latin markets.
  • NOTE: If you prefer to make the mousse with the real pulp of the fresh fruit, make sure to beat it with a whisk or in the mixer (low speed) just enough to extract the juice. Then strain out the seeds and use the juice to make the dessert with the other 2 ingredients in the blender. Never extract the juice in the blender since the ground up seeds can make the mouse bitter.

  • Chocolate shavings or curls – grate a dark or white chocolate bar and sprinkle the shavings over top of the mousse, or use a vegetable peeler to make chocolate curls to place on top for a nice extra touch. In Brazil, it is very common to combine passion fruit and chocolate in the same dessert – in much the same way as peanut butter and chocolate are a beloved combo in America.

  • This is a perfect make-ahead dessert because the mousse refrigerates very well. Just be sure to cover the ramekins well with plastic wrap to prevent food contamination and to keep the mousse from drying out. Hold off on any toppings until you’re about to serve the mousse.
