Easy Savory Baked Pears
Description
The pears are quartered and cored, then combined in a baking dish with peeled red onion wedges and rosemary sprigs. Olive oil, maple syrup, and apple cider vinegar are drizzled over and tossed to coat evenly. After seasoning with salt and pepper, the mixture is baked at 180ºC/350ºF for 35–40 minutes until everything is soft and lightly caramelized. The baking process softens the pears, intensifies their sweetness, and melds flavors with the savory onion and rosemary.
The resulting pears are tender yet retain some structure, while the red onion adds a mild pungency softened by roasting. The maple syrup adds a subtle sweetness, balanced by the acidity of the apple cider vinegar, creating a nuanced flavor profile. Rosemary introduces an aromatic herbal layer that complements the fruit and onions. This makes a pleasant savory-sweet side dish or accompaniment for poultry or pork.
Choosing firm pears like Anjou helps maintain texture during baking, while red onions provide a colorful contrast but may be substituted with other onion varieties. Maple syrup can be replaced with honey, and apple cider vinegar with white wine vinegar if preferred. The dish can be served hot, warm, or at room temperature according to taste or meal pairing.
For best results, toss ingredients gently to ensure even coating before baking. Adjust seasoning to taste just prior to serving. The recipe’s balance of sweet, acidic, and herbal notes makes it adaptable to various menus or seasonal produce availability.
