Easy & Simple Chinese Five Spice Taters

These Chinese Five Spice Taters are small cubes of Yukon Gold potatoes seasoned with Chinese five spice, garlic powder, and salt, then baked until crisp and golden. The dish is garnished with chopped green onions and serves as a flavorful side or snack with a mildly spiced, aromatic profile and a crispy exterior with tender interiors.

Description

The recipe involves peeling and dicing small Yukon Gold potatoes into uniform 2-centimeter cubes. The potatoes are tossed evenly with Chinese five spice powder, garlic powder, salt, and vegetable oil, which are massaged into the potatoes by hand to ensure full coating of spices and oil for even roasting.

Baked at 425°F on a large baking sheet without flipping, the potatoes develop a golden-brown, crisp exterior while maintaining a soft, tender inside. The use of Chinese five spice adds a distinctive blend of warm spices such as star anise, cloves, and cinnamon, giving the potatoes a unique aromatic quality uncommon to traditional roasted potatoes.

The dish is finished off with finely chopped green onions for a fresh herbal note that complements the warm spices. These potatoes pair well with a side of mayonnaise or Japanese mayo for dipping, enhancing the overall flavor experience.
