Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 medium apple
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • ½ tablespoon sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar (if desired)

Instructions

  1. Wash, peel, core and remove the seeds from the apples. Chop into medium pieces.
  2. In a large pot add the apples, the water, lemon juice and sugar, cover and simmer over low heat for approximately 30-45 minutes, stirring occasionally until softened.
  3. Using a blender or food processor, blend until it reaches the desired smoothness. Pour the mixture back into the pot, add the cinnamon and allspice, place on very low heat uncovered, stirring often making sure it doesn't burn. Heat until mixture becomes a dark brown colour and reaches desired thickness.
  4. Remove from the heat taste for sugar and if necessary add a little brown sugar. (I added 1 teaspoon). Remove to a glass jar or container and refrigerate. Enjoy!

Notes

  • This recipes makes 1 1/4 cups.
  • Choosing the right apple variety will impact the final flavor, texture and sweet flavor of this easy stovetop apple butter.  I like to use softer varieties such as Fuji, Golden Delicious, McIntosh, or Jonagold since they cook down faster. If you like a hint of tartness, add a few tart apples like Granny Smith!
  • Whether you pick up apples from the local apple orchard or purchase them store-bought, the most important thing is to use apples you like to eat!
  • Store apple butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator for several weeks. You can also freeze it in freezer safe containers for up to a year. Defrost in the refrigerator.
