Easy Strawberry Applesauce
Description
Easy Strawberry Applesauce starts by simmering peeled, cored, and chopped apples with water and sugar until fully softened. Once the apples are tender, fresh hulled strawberries and vanilla extract are blended into the mixture, resulting in a homogenous and flavorful sauce with a balance of sweetness and fruit brightness.
The apples soften around 25 minutes of simmering, and stirring often prevents sticking. Fresh strawberries add a mild berry flavor and vibrant red color to the smooth applesauce, which can be blended to a desired consistency using an immersion blender or regular blender.
This sauce can be enjoyed warm or chilled and makes a versatile fruit topping or snack. It pairs well with breakfast items, desserts, or simply as a fresh, fruity accompaniment.
The sugar amount can be adjusted or omitted depending on the natural sweetness of the apples for a less sweet version. Texture can be customized by mashing or blending.
Ingredients
- 3 ½ pounds apples (about 12 medium), peeled, cored and chopped
- ½ cup of water
- ⅓ cup sugar
- 1 pint strawberry rinsed and hulled
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a large pot, add chopped apple, water and sugar. Bring to a simmer. Simmer for 25 minutes, or until the apples are soft, stirring often and checking for sticking. If apples begin to stick to the bottom of the pot, add a large splash of more water. Once soft, turn off heat.
- Add strawberries and vanilla extract. Using an immersion blender, blend apple-strawberry mixture until smooth. (If you don't have an immersion blender, transfer to an upright blender or food processor.) Enjoy warm or chilled.
Notes
- An apple corer reduces prep time for peeling and chopping.
- Adjust sugar at the end to suit apple sweetness, avoiding excess sweetness.
- For chunky texture, mash strawberries separately or after cooking, rather than fully blending.
- Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for a balanced flavor profile.
