Easy Strawberry Crunch Recipe
Description
The recipe pulverizes freeze-dried strawberries into a fine powder using a food processor (or by hand) and combines that powder with crushed golden Oreos, which retain their cream filling. Melted butter is mixed in to bind the crumbs together. The resulting mixture can simply be cooled and used as a topping for ice cream, cakes, yogurt, or desserts.
If desired, the mixture can be baked at 3506F for 5-10 minutes to develop a crunchier texture that holds up better when used as a topping or crust. The sweet strawberry flavor complements the vanilla notes of the Oreos, enriched by the added fat from butter.
This topping can be stored in an airtight container in a cool area for up to two months or frozen up to six months. It is quick to prepare and adds a crunchy fruity layer to dishes without complicated ingredients or steps.
Ingredients
- 1 cup freeze-dried strawberries about one package
- 20-24 golden Oreos Sub with Shortbread Cookies, Nilla wafers or a combination.* Do not remove cream filling.
- 4 ounces butter melted, salted or unsalted (½ a stick)
Instructions
Food Processor Method
- Add freeze-dried strawberries to food process and pulse until they become a powder.
- Then place cookies and pulse until a medium-fine crumb; pour into a medium bowl.
- Stir strawberry powder into crushed cookies. Stir in the melted butter and coat until combined. Pour onto parchment lined baking sheet and cool or bake.
Manual Hand Method
- In a freezer baggie, place half the cookies at a time and give them a few good whacks with a meat mallet or rolling pin, then roll until medium-fine crumbs, dump into a bowl and repeat with the rest of the cookies.
- Repeat with the freeze-dried strawberries (in a new bag if necessary) and combine the mixture into cookie crumbs. Stir in melted butter until coated. Allow to dry on baking sheet. That’s it! You can use it just like this or bake it, see below for how to bake and storage instructions.
Baked Strawberry Crunch Recipe
- With mixture in single layer on baking sheet, bake in 350°F (175° C) oven for 5-10 minutes until it's golden brown. Remove and cool completely before storing in airtight container.
Notes
- Do not remove cream filling from Oreos; it adds sweetness and texture.
- The mixture can be used raw or baked at 3506F for 5-10 minutes to enhance crispiness.
- For vegan version, replace butter with vegan butter or melted coconut oil.
- Allow strawberry powder to settle after pulsing to reduce fine dust.
- Store in an airtight container in a cool place for up to two months, or freeze up to six months.
- This topping works well on ice cream, cakes, or as a crumble topping.
