Description
Easy Teriyaki Chicken involves quickly browning chicken breast cubes in sesame oil to seal in juices and create texture. The sauce combines low-sodium soy sauce with rice vinegar, honey, brown sugar, fresh crushed garlic, and ginger, creating a balance of sweet, tangy, and umami flavors. The optional addition of sake or mirin adds authenticity and subtle complexity to the sauce.
After bringing the sauce to a boil and allowing it to thicken slightly, the chicken is returned to the pan to simmer until fully cooked and coated with a sticky glaze. Sprinkling sesame seeds at the end contributes a nutty flavor and textural contrast.
This teriyaki chicken pairs well with steamed rice or stir-fried vegetables. It offers a straightforward and flavorful meal using simple ingredients readily available in many kitchens.
Ingredients
- 500 g (1lb) chicken breast cubed, boneless skinless
- 1-2 tsp sesame oil
- ½ cup soy sauce (I prefer using low-sodium soy sauce)
- ¼ cup sake optional, replace with water, or mirin
- ¼ cup rice vinegar
- 2 tbsp honey
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 garlic crushed, cloves
- 1 tsp fresh ginger crushed
- sesame seeds to serve
Instructions
- Heat a large frying pan over high heat.
- Pat the chicken breast pieces dry with paper towels.
- Add the sesame oil to the pan followed by the chicken. Brown the chicken well on all sides then remove from the pan and set aside.
- Combine the remaining ingredients except for the sesame seeds. Pour into the pan.
- Allow the sauce to come to a boil and cook for 1-2 minutes until it starts to thicken then add the chicken and its resting juices back into the pan.
- Allow to cook for 4-5 minutes until the chicken is cooked through and the sauce is sticky and coating the chicken.
- Sprinkle over the sesame seeds and serve.
