For the Chocolate Sheet Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 large egg
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • teaspoons vanilla extract pure
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup butter 2 sticks, unsalted
  • cup cocoa powder unsweetened

For the Frosting

  • ¾ cup butter softened (1½ sticks, unsalted
  • cup water or milk
  • 5 tablespoons cocoa powder unsweetened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • ¾ cup pecans optional, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350℉.
  2. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the cocoa powder until smooth. Then, add in the water, and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, remove from heat. 
  3. Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Using an electric mixer, mix in the eggs, sour cream, and vanilla extract. 
  4. Pour the cocoa mixture into the flour ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased 18x13-inch rimmed baking sheet. Bake for 17-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean. 
  6. In a saucepan, heat the butter and water/milk. Once warm, whisk in the cocoa powder until smooth. Bring the mixture to a boil. Then, take off the heat, and whisk in the powdered sugar, and pecans.
  7. Pour the frosting over the cake, using a spatula to cover it entirely. 

Notes

  • Storage: Store Texas sheet cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
