Egg Roll Dipping Sauce

This Egg Roll Dipping Sauce brings together a mix of soy sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, and seasonings to create a balanced sweet and tangy glaze. It thickens slightly when boiled and finishes with hints of sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and onion powders, ideal for complementing savory egg rolls.

Description

The Egg Roll Dipping Sauce relies on a harmonious blend of soy sauce, rice vinegar, and brown sugar to deliver a combination of savory, sour, and sweet notes. Corn starch is used to thicken the sauce, while sesame oil adds a subtle nutty aroma. Ground ginger and powdered garlic and onion contribute to the sauce’s layered flavor. The ingredients are whisked together in a saucepan and heated just to boiling to meld the flavors and activate the thickener. Removing the sauce quickly after boiling ensures a thin, glossy consistency, but boiling a little longer results in a thicker sauce. This gives control over the texture to suit preference.

The sauce is intended as a dip for sausage egg rolls, providing a bright and slightly thickened coating that enhances their savory filling. It pairs well with egg rolls as a complementary contrast in flavor and moisture.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon corn starch
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Instructions

  1. Whisk together all ingredients in a small saucepan. Turn heat to medium low and bring to a boil, stirring frequently.
  2. Remove from the heat immediatley after the sauce comes to a boil for a thin, glossy sauce. For a thicker sauce, let the sauce boil for 20 seconds or so.
  3. Serve with sausage egg rolls.

Notes

  • You can adjust the sauce thickness by varying how long you boil it after it reaches a boil.
  • Serve freshly made for best texture with egg rolls or other fried appetizers.
