Eggnog Buttercream Frosting

Eggnog Buttercream Frosting blends softened butter, powdered sugar, eggnog, nutmeg, and rum extract to create a creamy, smooth icing with a subtle nutmeg aroma and festive flavor. This frosting offers a rich, spiced profile suitable for topping cakes or cupcakes, especially around holidays.

Description

The frosting starts by whipping softened butter until light, then gradually incorporating powdered sugar on low speed. Eggnog, combined with ground nutmeg and rum extract, is added to form a smooth, spreadable buttercream with gentle holiday spices. The mixing speed is increased to fully aerate the frosting, lending it a fluffy and creamy texture. Additional eggnog or cream can be added to adjust consistency for easier spreading or piping.

This buttercream is ideal for frosting cakes, cupcakes, or other baked treats, lending a seasonal flavor that complements vanilla or spice-based desserts. Nutmeg and rum extract add depth without overpowering the sweet creaminess.

If eggnog is not available, using cream as a substitute works well; adding a bit more nutmeg and rum extract can help approximate the flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup butter softened to room temperature
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 4 Tablespoons eggnog
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon rum extract
  • Pinch salt

Instructions

  1. In a stand mixer using the whisk attachment, beat butter until light.
  2. Add powdered sugar and mix on low speed.  Drizzle in eggnog or cream, along with the nutmeg and rum extract, then increase speed to medium-high and beat until light and creamy.  Add additional eggnog or cream as needed to get a smooth buttercream consistency.

Notes

  • To substitute eggnog, use cream and consider adding extra nutmeg and rum extract to maintain flavor.
  • Adjust the amount of eggnog or cream added to achieve the desired frosting consistency.
