Falafel Burgers
Description
The recipe starts with dividing falafel mix into portions, rolling into balls, and flattening into patties to ensure even cooking. These patties are fried in a lightly oiled skillet until both sides develop a rich brown crust while retaining moisture inside. Careful flipping prevents crumble.
For assembling, the bottom bun is spread with tzatziki to add tang and moisture. The hot falafel patty is placed on top and layered with cheese, where used, thin cucumber slices, red onion rings, and tomato slices provide fresh, crisp textures. Sprouts or lettuce finish the stack, adding greenery and slight bitterness. The top bun is spread with hummus for additional creaminess and flavor balance.
The resulting burger combines the herbal, spiced flavor of falafel with cooling and creamy sauces alongside fresh vegetables offering texture contrast. Serving promptly helps maintain warmth and crispness. This sandwich is suitable for vegetarians with options for cheese inclusion.
Ingredients
- 2 cups falafel mix
- olive oil
- 4 Tbsp hummus
- 4 Tbsp tzatziki sauce
- 4 lices cheese omit for vegan
- 1/2 cucumber thinly sliced
- 8 red onion very thin slices
- 8 tomato very thin slices
- 1/2 cup sprouts or lettuce
Instructions
- Divide the falafel mix into 4 1/2 cup portions and gently roll into balls. Place the balls between sheets of waxed or parchment paper and flatten. You can use a heavy cast iron skillet, or even a tortilla press! Keep chilled until ready to fry.
- Lightly coat the bottom of a nonstick skillet with oil. Heat until hot and then, working in batches if necessary, fry the burgers until crispy and browned on the first side. Then flip (gently!) and cook until browned and crisp on the second side.
- Spread a layer of tzatziki on the bottom of four buns.
- Top with your falafel burger patties.
- Add your cheese ~ I like to use 2 slices of extra thin pepper jack.
- Top the cheese with your cucumber slices.
- Follow with your red onions.
- add tomato slices.
- Finish the stack with your sprouts or lettuce.
- Spread a layer of hummus on the upper bun.
- Serve the burgers asap while still hot.
Notes
- Scale the recipe to make multiple burgers by doubling or tripling the falafel mix quantities.
- For a lower carb option, omit the bun and serve burgers on a bed of green salad instead.
