Fall Leaves Sugar Cookies

Fall Leaves Sugar Cookies are tender, lightly chocolaty cookies shaped like seasonal leaves using a maple leaf cutter. A hint of cacao powder adds subtle depth to the classic sugar cookie dough. The cookies bake to golden edges while remaining soft inside, fitting the autumn theme visually and in flavor.

Description

These sugar cookies combine all-purpose flour and a small amount of cacao powder for color and gentle chocolate notes, balanced by vanilla extract and sugar. Butter and egg create a smooth dough that is chilled before rolling out, making it easier to shape clean leaf designs.

Cut out with a maple leaf cookie cutter, the cookies bake at 350°F until the edges just turn golden brown, ensuring a tender texture with slight chewiness. The cookies can be enjoyed without additional decoration or frosted if desired.

They are festive for fall celebrations and pair nicely with tea or coffee. Their delicate cocoa undertone adds complexity that differentiates them from plain sugar cookies.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 1/3 cup flour
  • 1 tbsp cacao powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 12 tbsp butter room temperature, unsalted
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, cacao powder, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  2. Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, beat the butter, sugar, vanilla extract, and egg together on medium-high speed until smooth.
  3. Slowly, blend in the dry ingredients to the wet until they are just combined. Be careful not to over mix!
  4. Cover the bowl of dough with plastic wrap and let it chill in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F. On a floured surface, roll the dough out with a rolling pin until it's about 1/4-inch thick. Using a maple leaf shaped cookie cutter, cut out the cookie shapes and place them onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Bake the cookies for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges turn a light shade of golden brown. Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool for a couple minutes. Enjoy!
