Fish Pie with Mashed Potato Topping
Description
Fish Pie with Mashed Potato Topping centers on cooked salmon chunks mixed with a buttery flour-thickened sauce enriched with Parmesan and Dijon mustard. Including mixed vegetables and spring onions adds texture and freshness. The sauce is creamy yet light and gently seasoned with black pepper.
The mashed potato topping is made by boiling potatoes until tender, then mashing them with milk, butter, and salt for a creamy consistency. Cheddar cheese sprinkled on top adds a golden and flavorful crust when baked.
The assembled pie is baked to meld the filling and to achieve a lightly browned and bubbling potato topping. Fresh dill and parsley sprinkled through the filling provide an herbal lift that complements the fish.
This dish serves as a satisfying homemade comfort meal combining protein, vegetables, and creamy potato topping. It is suitable for baking in one large dish or smaller portions. Measurements can be switched readily for US customary units, and servings can be adjusted as needed.

- 25 g butter

- 1 cup milk
- black pepper a pinch
- 2 tablespoon Parmesan Cheese grated
- ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard
For the mashed potato topping:

- 1 butter knob
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup cheddar cheese grated
Herbs
- 1 tablespoon dill chopped fresh
- 1 tablespoon parsley chopped fresh
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (390 Fahrenheit).
- Place the salmon fillets on a baking tray, season with salt and pepper, and bake for 15 minutes until thoroughly cooked.
- Remove from the oven and allow them to cool.
- Place the cubed potatoes in a pot and cover with water.
- Add a pinch of salt and boil until tender.
- Drain the water, then add milk, salt and butter.
- Use a masher to mash until it's light and creamy.
- Set aside.
- In a saucepan, melt the butter and add the flour, whisking well.
- Add the milk and continue to whisk until the sauce thickens.
- Next, season with ground black pepper, add the parmesan cheese, dijon mustard, and stir.
- In goes the salmon, which can be cut into chunks or use two forks to shred them.
- The mixed veggies and chopped spring onion can go in as well.
- Give the mixture a good stir and spoon it onto 2 smaller oven-proof dishes or a larger one.
- Top it with mashed potatoes and sprinkle over the cheddar cheese.
- Bake at 180 degrees Celsius (350 Fahrenheit) for 20-25 minutes until golden and piping hot.
Notes
- Use fresh salmon fillets for the best texture and flavor; ensure they are thoroughly cooked before mixing into the sauce.
- Allow the salmon to cool after baking to make it easier to handle when cutting into chunks or shredding.
- This dish can be prepared in one large ovenproof dish or divided among smaller ones for portion control.
- Adjust seasoning and cheese on top to taste; cheddar adds a rich crust when baked.
