Football Cookies

The Football Cookies are sugar cookies shaped and decorated to resemble a football field with green, yellow icing, and white frosting details. The dough is a traditional butter and sugar base with vanilla, producing crisp yet tender cookies. The decorations include green icing as the field base, white frosting for lines, and rainbow or custom sprinkles representing the stadium, accented by yellow icing for the goalposts.

Description

These Football Cookies begin with a classic sugar cookie dough made by creaming softened butter with sugar, then adding egg and vanilla. Flour, baking soda, and powder are mixed in to form the dough, which is scooped into balls and flattened slightly before baking until firm with lightly browned edges. After cooling, the cookies are decorated to create a football field scene.

The decorating involves applying a base layer of green cookie icing, which must be allowed to set before adding yellow icing for the field goal posts to avoid blending. White frosting is used to mimic yard lines or football laces, and nonpareil sprinkles add stadium-like texture and color. Colors can be customized to match favorite team colors, allowing creative personalization for game day treats.

These cookies are well suited for sporting events, parties, or festive occasions involving football. Their crispy surfaces balanced with tender interiors provide a pleasant texture, and the detailed decoration adds a thematic visual appeal.

Cookies can be stored in airtight containers for up to a week and may be frozen in freezer-safe bags for longer preservation. Using homemade cookie icing or store-bought with food coloring allows flexibility in decoration approach.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup butter softened to room temperature, unsalted
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • white frosting
  • Sprinkles rainbow circle (nonpareils
  • 7 oz cookie icing green color
  • 2 oz cookie icing yellow color

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with a piece of parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add the dry ingredients including the all purpose flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Whisk them together until they are combined then, set aside.
  3. In a large bowl of a stand mixer cream together the butter and the sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix until the mixture is a smooth texture.
  5. Add the flour mixture a little at a time and then mix on low speed until the flour is fully combined with the butter mixture. Repeat until all of the flour mixture has been added.
  6. Using a spoon or a small cookie scoop, put little balls of dough onto the parchment lined baking sheet, making sure to leave about an inch between cookies. Press down gently on each ball of cookie dough with either a cup, the bottom of a small bowl, or the palm of your hand to flatten them slightly.
  7. Bake the cookies for 15 to 20 minutes or until the tops and edges are a light golden brown color. Transfer cookies to a wire cooling rack to cool.
  8. Using the back of a spoon or a knife, add the white frosting to half of each of the cookies then press the cookie down into a bowl of the rainbow sprinkles to coat the frosting in the sprinkles to create your audience.
  9. Frost the other half of the cookie with the green cookie icing to make the field. Let the green icing set for 10 minutes to allow it to harden.
  10. With the yellow cookie icing make a goal post in the center of the green portion of the cookie. Allow the icing to harden then serve.

Notes

  • Allow the green icing to fully set before adding yellow field goal icing to prevent colors from mixing.
  • Customize sprinkles with your favorite team colors for personalizing the stadium design.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container for up to one week to maintain freshness.
  • Cookies can be frozen in zipper-top freezer bags for longer storage.
  • Any white frosting may be used for decoration, including vanilla, whipped cream, or cream cheese-based varieties.
  • Choose small rainbow nonpareil sprinkles (round) rather than longer jimmies for the best stadium effect.
  • You may use either homemade sugar cookie dough or store-bought dough for convenience.
