Freezer Friendly Garlic Bread

This garlic bread recipe uses a French bread loaf spread with a savory mixture of softened butter, garlic powder, dried parsley, and salt, creating a richly flavored base that can be baked immediately or frozen for later. The method includes spreading the garlic butter evenly inside split bread, then baking after cutting into chunks or freezing entire halves. The inclusion of garlic powder and dried parsley yields a consistent flavor that's easy to store long term while offering variations such as fresh garlic or added cheese.

Description

Freezer Friendly Garlic Bread starts with slicing a loaf of French bread lengthwise and applying a butter mixture seasoned with garlic powder, parsley flakes, and salt. This mixture provides a garlicky herb flavor spread uniformly inside the bread halves. For immediate use, the bread is cut into large chunks and baked at a moderate temperature until golden and crispy. For freezing, the halves are frozen separately with butter side up before wrapping tightly to preserve freshness and protect from freezer burn.

The recipe allows flexibility with garlic type, offering an option to substitute garlic powder with minced fresh garlic for a stronger garlic presence. Dried parsley flakes add color and a mild herbaceous note, which can be varied with other herbs like basil or thyme. The recipe also suggests possibilities for vegan versions using plant-based butter and adaptations for low-sodium diets.

Garlic bread made this way can be reheated from frozen, retaining its flavor and texture, and can be enjoyed as a side, snack, or appetizer. Additional toppings such as grated cheeses or red pepper flakes can modify the flavor profile when baking.

Fresh garlic (5-6 cloves, minced) can replace garlic powder for stronger flavor.Plant-based butter and vegan bread can make this recipe suitable for vegans.Omitting salt and using unsalted butter reduces sodium for low-sodium needs.Substitute dried parsley with basil, thyme, or Italian herbs for different tastes.Add grated Parmesan or mozzarella before baking for cheesy garlic bread.Red pepper flakes incorporated into the butter mixture add spiciness.Cutting bread into sticks before adding garlic butter offers a different presentation.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 loaf French bread
  • 1 Cup butter softened
  • 2 TBSP garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 TBSP dried parsley flakes
  • 1/2 TBSP salt

Instructions

  1. Remove your bread from the plastic bag and set plastic bag aside for later use.
  2. Cut your loaf of bread in half long ways.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the softened butter, garlic powder, dried parsley and salt together and mix until well combined.
  4. Using a butter knife or spatula spread the butter mixture thoroughly to the insides of both halves of the bread.

MAKE IT NOW

  1. Preheat your oven to 325 degrees.
  2. Using a sharp knife, cut into large chunks and place on a greased cookie sheet.
  3. Bake at 325 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until golden.

FREEZE IT FOR LATER

  1. Place bread butter side up on a baking sheet in the freezer for about 20 minutes.
  2. Remove from freezer and combine the two halves of bread, butter sides facing each other.
  3. Wrap the loaf of bread thoroughly and tightly with plastic wrap, making sure every spot is covered.
  4. Now place your loaf of bread inside the bag it came in, making sure the majority of the air is out of the bag. Tie the bag with the bread tie it came with.
  5. Place in freezer and freeze for up to 4 months for best results.
  6. To bake, remove from freezer and allow to thaw for about an hour outside the fridge.
  7. Using a sharp knife, cut into large chunks and place on a greased cookie sheet.
  8. Bake at 325 degrees for 18-20 minutes or until golden.

Notes

  • Minced fresh garlic (about 5-6 cloves) can substitute garlic powder for a stronger garlic flavor.
  • Use plant-based butter and verify bread is vegan to accommodate vegan preferences.
  • Leave out salt and use unsalted butter for a low-sodium version.
  • Replace parsley flakes with other dried herbs like basil, thyme, or Italian seasoning to vary the flavor.
  • Sprinkle grated Parmesan or mozzarella on top before baking to make cheesy garlic bread.
  • Add red pepper flakes to the butter mixture to give a spicy kick.
  • Cut bread into sticks before applying garlic butter to create garlicky breadsticks.
