French Bread Pizza

French Bread Pizza uses a split loaf of French bread topped with herb-infused butter, pizza sauce, a cheese blend, and pepperoni slices. The bread is baked until the cheese melts and browns slightly, creating a crispy top and a soft bread base. Fresh herbs in the butter add aromatic flavor beneath the sauce. This pizza adapts traditional toppings onto a convenient bread base for a quick homemade option that can be sliced and served warm.

Description

French Bread Pizza begins with halving a fresh French bread loaf lengthwise, then spreading the cut sides with a mixture of softened butter, fresh basil, parsley, and garlic powder. This herb butter flavors the base beneath the sauce. The bread halves are topped evenly with pizza sauce, followed by a mixture of cheeses typically including mozzarella and pecorino-romano. Seasonings of oregano and red pepper flakes are sprinkled over the cheese before adding pepperoni slices.

Baked at 425°F for about 12 to 25 minutes, the pizza cooks until the cheese is melted and golden brown, and the bread edges become slightly crusty but remain tender inside. Optionally, the finished pizza can be garnished with fresh basil leaves before slicing and serving.

For a crisper crust, the bread can be pre-baked for 5 minutes after applying herb butter, then topped and baked further. Leftover pizza keeps well when stored airtight in the refrigerator for up to 5 days and is best enjoyed warmed.

Ingredients

Servings

  • ¼ cup butter softened, salted
  • 1 teaspoon basil minced, fresh
  • 1 teaspoon parsley minced, fresh
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup pizza sauce marinara sauce may be substituted
  • 2 cups pizza cheese usually a mixture of mozzarella, pecorino-romano, etc.
  • 1 teaspoon oregano dried
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • pepperoni for topping, slices
  • basil optional for garnishing, fresh leaves

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425F.
  2. Slice the French bread in half lengthwise top to bottom and place on a large baking sheet; set aside.
  3. In a small bowl, mix together the softened butter, basil, parsley, and garlic powder until fully combined and use a rubber spatula to gently spread it over the top of the cut sides of bread.
  4. Top each half of the bread evenly with pizza sauce* and then sprinkle the cheese evenly.
  5. Sprinkle the oregano and red pepper flakes over the top of the cheese.
  6. Top with pepperoni and bake for 12 to 25 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and is as golden browned as desired, and the bread is slightly crusty to the touch* (See Notes for tips for a crispier crust).
  7. Optionally garnish with fresh basil leaves, slice, and serve. Pizza is best warm and fresh but will keep airtight in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Notes

  • For a crispier crust, bake the bread with herb butter alone for 5 minutes before adding toppings.

  • Store leftovers airtight in the refrigerator for up to 5 days; reheat before serving.
