Fried Apple Pies

Fried Apple Pies combine tender apple filling with warm spices inside a flaky puff pastry crust that crisps beautifully when fried. The spiced apple mixture thickened with cornstarch is spooned into pastry squares, folded, crimped, chilled, then fried until golden. After frying, the pies are coated with cinnamon sugar for added sweetness and texture. These pies offer a crunchy pastry exterior with soft, cinnamon-infused apple filling.

Description

Fried Apple Pies start with simmering diced Granny Smith apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground cloves until soft. This cooked filling is thickened with cornstarch and finished with butter for richness. Puff pastry sheets are cut into rectangles, filled with the apple mixture, and sealed by folding and crimping the edges. Chilling the pies before frying helps maintain their shape and improves the crust's texture.

Cooking the pies in 3 inches of oil at 350°F for 5-6 minutes crisps the puff pastry until golden brown while heating the filling through. Once fried, they are sprinkled with cinnamon sugar, which adds a sweet, slightly crunchy coating. Serving these pies with optional caramel sauce enhances their dessert appeal.

Use a thermometer to monitor oil temperature for even frying and avoid greasiness. Allow the fried pies to drain on paper towels to remove extra oil before serving. Pre-made or canned apple filling can be a substitute if short on time.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 17.3 ounce box Puff pastry sheets thawed
  • 3 cups apple peeled, cored and diced, Granny Smith variety
  • 6 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 4 teaspoons cinnamon divided use
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon cloves ground
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • caramel sauce optional, for serving
  • cooking oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Cut each sheet of puff pastry into 4 pieces. Place on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper.
  2. Place the apples, brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg  and cloves in a pan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer.
  3. Cook for 6-8 minutes or until apples are tender. Stir in the butter.
  4. Whisk the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water and add to the apple mixture. Cook for 2-3 minutes or until apple filling has thickened.
  5. Spoon approximately 2 tablespoons of the apple mixture onto one side of each piece of puff pastry. Brush the edges with water and fold over to make a rectangle.
  6. Crimp the edges of each puff pastry rectangle with a fork.
  7. Chill the pies for 20 minutes in the freezer.
  8. Heat 3 inches of oil to 350 degrees F.
  9. Cook 2-3 pies at a time, for 5-6 minutes or until golden brown and pastry is cooked through.
  10. In a small bowl, mix together the granulated sugar and cinnamon.
  11. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar all over each pie as it comes out of the oil.
  12. Repeat the frying and cinnamon sugar sprinkling process with all of the remaining pies.
  13. Let the pies cool and enjoy with caramel sauce if desired.

Notes

  • Canned apple filling can substitute homemade for convenience without altering the pie's flavor significantly.
  • Maintain oil temperature between 350°F to ensure even frying and prevent sogginess.
  • Drain fried pies on paper towels to remove excess oil before serving.
  • Use enough oil to submerge pies fully but avoid overfilling the frying vessel for safety.
