Fried Pears

Fried Pears is a simple dessert featuring ripe but firm pears that are sliced thick and caramelized in butter and maple syrup. The pears develop a golden, syrupy coating that balances sweetness and tenderness while maintaining their shape. This dish is enhanced with a pinch of ground nutmeg and served best with vanilla ice cream, offering a warm, soft fruit dessert with a hint of spice for a comforting finish.

Description

Fried Pears combines firm pears cooked in butter and maple syrup until they caramelize and turn golden. The pears are sliced thickly to keep their form during cooking, allowing the natural sweetness to blend with the buttery syrup. A pinch of ground nutmeg adds warmth and complements the rich maple flavor.

The cooking method involves melting butter and syrup in a skillet, then adding the pear slices to cook until bubbling and golden brown on both sides. This process produces tender yet intact pears with a glossy, caramelized surface.

This dessert can be served warm topped with vanilla ice cream and extra nutmeg, creating a contrast of temperatures and textures. It is ideal for a cozy dessert or a special fruit treat.

Choosing Bosc pears ensures firmness and good shape retention. Using a sharp knife for thick slices helps achieve an even cooking process. When pears are particularly ripe, a little extra butter and syrup might be needed to counterbalance the juice they release during cooking.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 pear ripe but firm
  • 1 teaspoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup (or honey)

To serve (optional)

  • 2 coops vanilla ice cream
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Core the pears and slice thickly.
  2. Add the butter, maple syrup and salt to the skillet and allow it to melt, then add the pear slices.
  3. Let it cook and bubble until the pears turn golden and the syrup reduces, turning once.
  4. When the pear slices are golden and caramelised, divide onto serving plates and top with a scoop of ice cream and pinch of ground nutmeg.

Notes

  • Use a sharp knife to slice pears thickly for even cooking and to prevent breaking.
  • Bosc pears are preferred as they hold their shape well when fried.
  • Cook pears in batches if needed, adding extra butter or syrup for caramelization.
  • Ripe pears may release juice when sliced; the maple syrup complements this natural sweetness.
