Frosted Sugar Cookies

Frosted Sugar Cookies combine a soft dough made with butter and cream cheese for tender texture, rolled and cut into shapes, then baked until lightly golden. The cookies are topped with a creamy almond-vanilla frosting that can be colored as desired, making these cookies suitable for decorating and special occasions.

Description

These Frosted Sugar Cookies start by creaming together softened butter, cream cheese, granulated and powdered sugars, almond extract, and egg to create a fluffy base. A blend of flour, baking powder, and salt is mixed in until a soft dough forms. The dough is then rolled out and cut into shapes before baking at 375°F until edges are lightly golden, yielding a cookie with a tender texture and a balance of buttery and sweet flavors.

Meanwhile, the frosting is made by mixing powdered sugar, softened butter, milk, vanilla, and almond extracts. The consistency is adjusted with milk as needed and food coloring can be added to customize appearance. Once cookies have cooled, they are frosted and allowed to set before storing.

The cookies store well at room temperature for several days and can be refrigerated or frozen for longer storage, while unbaked dough and frosting can also be prepared and stored ahead of time for convenience.

Ingredients

Servings

Cookies

  • ¾ cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 egg
  • cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Frosting

  • cups powdered sugar
  • cup unsalted butter softened
  • ¼ cup milk plus more as needed
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • Food Coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a cookie sheet and set aside.
  2. Cream butter, cream cheese, granulated sugar, powederd sugar, almond extract, and egg in a large bowl or stand mixer until fluffy.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt.
  4. Add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture and stir until a soft dough forms.
  5. Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to about ⅜ inch thick (roll thinner for more crunchy sugar cookies).
  6. Cut with cookie cutters (or the top of a cup) and bake for 9–12 minutes on the prepared cookie sheet. Let cookies sit on the cookie sheet for a few minutes, then remove to a rack to cool.

Frosting

  1. Mix powdered sugar, butter, milk, vanilla extract, and almond extract in a medium bowl with a hand mixer. Adjust the consistency by adding a little more milk. Add food coloring, if desired.
  2. Frost cookies and let set before storing.

Notes

  • Dough can be wrapped and refrigerated for 1-2 days or frozen for up to 3 months before baking.
  • Frosting should be stored airtight in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or frozen for up to 3 months.
  • Baked cookies keep fresh at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Allow frosting to set fully before stacking or storing to prevent sticking; separate layers with parchment or wax paper.
