Funny Cake Pie
Description
Funny Cake Pie uses a ready-made or homemade pie crust to hold a two-part filling. First, an unsweetened cocoa and sugar mixture is combined with hot water and vanilla, poured into the crust to form a rich chocolate base. Over this, a vanilla-flavored cake batter made from creamed butter, sugar, egg, flour, baking powder, milk, and vanilla is gently spread without mixing into the chocolate layer, preserving distinct layers after baking.
The baking process at 375ºF sets the chocolate layer and allows the vanilla cake mixture to rise and brown slightly on top. Mini chocolate chips sprinkled on top add texture contrast and extra chocolate flavor. The result is a dessert pie with a dense but moist chocolate bottom and a soft, cakey top, blending cocoa depth and vanilla sweetness.
This pie slices well and can be served as a unique take on layered chocolate cake in pie form. Adjusting the amount of cocoa or milk can modify flavor intensity and texture.
The original notes highlight halving pie crust when using grandma’s recipe, and mention approximate calorie information, suggesting the pie is cut into eight servings.
Ingredients
- pie pastry for one 9-inch crust
Top Part:
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar 100 grams
- 1/4 cup butter softened, 2 ounces, salted
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 grams
- 1 teaspoon baking powder 4 grams
- 1 cup all-purpose flour 130 grams
- 1/2 cup milk 4 ounces, 2%
Lower Part:
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar 100 grams
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder 33 grams, unsweetened
- 1/3 cup water 2.7 ounces, hot
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 gram
For topping:
- 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375ºF. Use a store bought single pie crust or your favorite pie crust recipe and press it into a 9" pie plate. Pie pastry for one 9" crust
- In a medium bowl, cream together the sugar, butter, egg and vanilla. In a separate bowl, mix together the baking powder and flour. 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup salted butter, 1 large egg, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 cup all purpose flour
- Add the flour mixture to the sugar mixture alternately with milk. Mix just until combined. Be careful not to overmix or it may make the cake tough. 1/2 cup 2% milk
- In a separate bowl, combine the sugar and cocoa. Add the hot water and vanilla and whisk until combined completely. 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/3 cup hot water, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pour the chocolate mixture into the pie crust, then spoon the cake batter over top the chocolate. Use the back of the spoon to gently spread the batter over top. Be careful doing this and don't worry if it doesn't cover the whole top. It will spread as it bakes. You want the fudgy chocolate to stay on the bottom of the pie and not get mixed in.
- Sprinkle the mini chocolate chips over the pie. Bake for 27-30 minutes until the cake is set. 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
- Serve warm with a scoop of ice cream.
Notes
- If using homemade pie crust, halve the recipe since this uses a single crust.
- This pie is typically cut into 8 slices for serving.
