German Chocolate Cake Bars

German Chocolate Cake Bars consist of a quick baked crust made from cake mix, butter, and egg, topped with a pecan and coconut filling blended with sweetened condensed milk, egg, and vanilla. The topping is adorned with milk chocolate chips that melt into a rich golden layer. The bars combine the convenience of a cake mix crust with a dense, sweet, and nutty coconut-pecan topping for a handheld dessert version of classic German chocolate cake.

Description

The crust of these bars is made by mixing a packaged devil's food cake mix with melted butter and one egg, pressed evenly into a greased 9×13 pan and partially baked to set the base. Meanwhile, the filling blends sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract, egg, chopped pecans, and shredded sweetened coconut, ingredients synonymous with traditional German chocolate cake frosting. Once the crust is ready, this mixture is poured on top, sprinkled with milk chocolate chips, then baked until the topping is lightly browned and set.

This method yields bars that maintain the layered flavors and textures of the original cake: a moist, chocolatey bottom and a caramelized, nutty, and chewy coconut topping. Baking until just golden keeps the filling creamy without overcooking.

Cool the bars thoroughly before slicing to allow them to firm up for neat squares. They serve well as a portable dessert alternative to a full cake and store readily for later enjoyment.

Ingredients

Servings

Crust:

  • 1 (15.25 ounce) box cake mix devil's good brand
  • 1/2 /2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 egg large

Filling:

  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg large
  • 1 cup pecans chopped
  • 1 cup coconut shredded, sweetened
  • 1/2 /2 cup milk chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan or spray with cooking spray.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix together the cake mix, butter and egg, and press into the bottom of the prepared pan. Bake for 7 minutes and remove from the oven. The crust will continue to bake in the next step.
  3. While the crust is baking, mix together the sweetened condensed milk, vanilla, egg, pecans and coconut. Pour evenly over the warm crust and sprinkle evenly with the chocolate chips. Bake for 24-30 minutes, until the top is a light golden brown. Don't overbake! Remove from the oven and cool completely before cutting into squares.

Notes

  • Use a devil's food cake mix for a rich chocolate crust base.
  • Mix filling ingredients well to evenly distribute pecans and coconut for consistent texture.
  • Do not overbake the bars; remove when slightly golden to keep topping moist.
  • Cool completely before cutting to maintain clean edges.
