German Chocolate Cookies
Description
This recipe consists of two parts: a chocolate cookie base baked at 375°F and a German chocolate frosting spread warm after the cookies have cooled. The cookies are made by creaming butter with brown and granulated sugars, vanilla, and eggs, then incorporating a flour mixture with cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Baked for 8–10 minutes, they develop a tender crumb with a subtle cocoa depth.
The frosting is cooked on the stove using evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, butter, and vanilla, stirred until thickened over about 11–12 minutes. Coconut and chopped pecans are mixed in afterward, creating a moist, textured topping spread over cooled cookies. Optionally, melted chocolate candy coating can be drizzled over for added richness and decoration.
The combination yields soft chocolate cookies with sweet, nutty, and coconut-rich frosting, reminiscent of traditional German chocolate cake flavors in cookie form. Chilling after assembly helps the frosting set for easier handling and serving.
