German Chocolate Pie

The German Chocolate Pie features a chocolate-rich filling set in a pie crust, combining melted chocolate with butter, flour, sugars, eggs, vanilla, chopped pecans, and flaked coconut. The texture is dense and fudgy with a toasted nutty crunch and coconut chewiness, baking until the top sets but stays moist inside. Chilling after baking firms the pie for slicing, making it a distinctive dessert for gatherings or special meals.

Description

This pie uses an unbaked pie crust filled with a mixture of melted butter and semi-sweet chocolate chips blended with a dry base of flour and sugars. Beaten eggs and vanilla add structure and flavor, while chopped pecans and flaked coconut are folded in for textural contrast and sweetness. A small portion of chocolate chips is reserved in the filling to add pockets of melty chocolate.

Baked at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 35 to 40 minutes, the pie develops a set but tender top layer. It has a fudgy interior with the pecans and coconut adding crunch and chewiness respectively. The gradual blending and gentle baking maintain a balanced texture and flavor without overbaking, which can dry the pie.

Serve cooled or at room temperature, optionally topped with whipped cream, toasted coconut, or dusted cocoa powder for presentation and added flavor elements. The pie stores well covered at room temperature for several days and can be frozen tightly wrapped, then thawed overnight for extended storage.

When freezing, wrap slices or whole pie in plastic wrap and place in an airtight container to preserve freshness and texture. Thaw gently or bake slightly longer if reheating from frozen.
