German Christmas Market Mushrooms with Garlic Sauce (Market Champignons)
Description
German Christmas Market Mushrooms with Garlic Sauce features whole mushrooms cooked gently with minced onion, seasoned with sea salt and black pepper. The highlight is the garlic sauce, a blend of finely minced garlic, heavy cream, crème fraîche, dill, and salt, which is whisked together until smooth and chilled to develop flavors. The combination results in tender mushrooms with a smooth, tangy, and slightly herby cream sauce. This dish is typically served in a bowl with the garlic sauce drizzled over the mushrooms, accompanied by a slice of bread to balance the creamy and earthy elements.
The creamy garlic sauce adds richness and aromatic depth, while the dill provides a subtle herbal note that complements the earthiness of the mushrooms. Sautéing the onion before adding mushrooms ensures a soft base flavor and aroma.
Serving this alongside bread offers a satisfying way to enjoy the sauce, making it a cozy appetizer or side. The recipe suggests making the garlic sauce ahead to enhance its flavor, which also helps convenience in preparation. Optional seasoning adjustments allow mild customization.
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 1 Tbsp butter
- 8 oz mushroom cleaned, whole
- ½ small onion (minced)
- ½ tsp salt sea salt
- ⅛ tsp black pepper (to taste, if desired)

- 1 clove garlic (finely minced)
- ⅓ cup heavy cream

Instructions
- Make the garlic sauce ahead of time, even the day before, if you like. Whisk the cream and creme fraiche together until smooth, then add the remaining ingredients. Chill for a minimum of 2 hours, so the flavors meld.
- Sauté the onion for about 4 minutes then add the mushrooms until cooked, add salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat.
- Serve the mushrooms, with the garlic sauce poured over the top, with a slice of bread in the side of the bowl (as served at the German Christmas market).
Notes
- This recipe allows omitting garlic or dill if dietary restrictions require it.
