Ginger Orange Cranberry Sauce Recipe

The Ginger Orange Cranberry Sauce combines fresh or frozen cranberries cooked with white sugar, grated ginger, and the zest and juice of two large oranges. The cranberry’s tartness is balanced by the sweet and aromatic ginger and bright citrus flavors, producing a thick sauce that thickens further as it cools. It serves as a vibrant accompaniment to meals.

Description

This cranberry sauce is prepared by bringing cranberries, sugar, freshly grated ginger, and orange zest and juice to a boil together. The mixture is then simmered on medium heat until the cranberries begin to break down and the sauce reduces slightly, creating a thick, chunky texture. Mashing the cranberries with a wooden spoon helps soften them further and release their juices.

The combination of ginger and orange adds warmth and brightness, complementing the natural tartness of the cranberries. As the sauce cools, it thickens and becomes suitable for spreading or serving alongside savory dishes, especially during holiday meals.

The sauce can be cooled and stored in jars, and it is suitable for canning for long-term storage. This allows preserving the seasonal flavors to enjoy throughout the year.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 cups Cranberry 1 - 12-ounce bag, fresh or frozen
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 6 tablespoons ginger grated
  • orange zest and juice, from two large

Instructions

  1. Add all the ingredients to a medium-sized pot over high heat. Bring the pot to a boil then reduce the heat to medium. When the cranberries begin to break down, use the back of a wooden spoon to crush them.
  2. Simmer the cranberry sauce for 10 more minutes, or until it is slightly reduced. Note: the cranberry sauce will thicken as it cools.
  3. Remove the pot from the heat and allow the cranberry sauce to cool before transferring it to a jar.

Notes

  • This cranberry sauce can be canned for preservation and use beyond the current season.
  • The sauce thickens as it cools, so timing the reduction to desired thickness before cooling is important.
