Glazed Pumpkin Scones

Glazed Pumpkin Scones combine warm spices and pumpkin puree in a tender scone dough topped with two complementary glazes: a smooth white glaze and a spiced pumpkin glaze. Baked to golden perfection, these scones feature cozy autumn flavors and a soft crumb. The double glaze adds both sweetness and spiced complexity, making them a seasonal treat ideal for breakfast or teatime.

Description

These Glazed Pumpkin Scones start with a dry mix of flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and a blend of warming spices including cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger. Cold butter is cut in to create a crumbly texture before folding in pumpkin puree, half and half, and egg into a rough dough. Formed into an 8-9 inch disc, the dough is cut into wedges and baked until lightly golden.

After cooling, the scones receive a dip in a white glaze made from powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla, which hardens to a glossy finish. Then a second glaze, seasoned with pumpkin and spices, is drizzled over to add depth and a seasonal twist. This two-step glazing adds visual appeal and layers of flavor without overwhelming the tender scone base.

The scones offer soft, moist textures with fragrant spices balanced by the creamy richness of pumpkin. They suit autumn breakfasts or snacks paired nicely with coffee or tea. Baking at a relatively high temperature ensures a golden crust and tender interior.

Ingredients

Servings

For the scones:

  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 ½ tablespoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves ground
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 6 tablespoons butter cold
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin canned
  • 1/4 cup half and half
  • 1 egg large

For the white glaze:

  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla

For the spiced glaze:

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons milk whole
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin canned
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon cloves ground
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and spices in a mixing bowl. Using a pastry cutter or two butter knives, cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. You can also do this in a food processor.
  2. In a separate bowl, thoroughly combine the pumpkin, half and half, and egg. Fold the wet ingredients into the dry just until a rough dough is formed. Turn out onto a piece of parchment paper and form into a disc about 1-inch thick and 8 to 9 inches in diameter. If the dough is sticky, sprinkle with a bit of flour.
  3. Cut the circle into 8 equal wedges and transfer to an ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 12-13 minutes, and cool completely.
  4. To make the glazes, simply mix together all the ingredients for each type until smooth. When scones are completely cooled, dip them into the white glaze and set aside to let the glaze set. Once the white glaze sets, drizzle the spiced glaze over the top. You can simply use a spoon or pipe the glaze on.
