Gluten Free Apple Crisp

This Gluten Free Apple Crisp features a tender, cinnamon-spiced apple filling topped with a crumbly mixture of brown sugar, gluten-free oats, flour, butter, and cinnamon. Baked until bubbly and golden, the crisp combines a soft, juicy fruit base with a textured, buttery topping suitable for gluten-sensitive diets.

Description

The apple filling consists of peeled, chopped apples tossed with granulated sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice to enhance flavor and prevent browning. The topping is prepared by mixing brown sugar, gluten-free old-fashioned rolled oats, gluten-free all-purpose flour, cinnamon, and cold unsalted butter, which is crumbled into the mixture by hand to create a coarse texture.

After assembling, the crisp is baked at 350°F for 45 to 50 minutes until the topping is golden and the apples are fork tender and bubbling underneath. A variety of apples such as Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, and Macintosh can be combined for optimal texture and flavor.

Leftovers should be refrigerated and consumed within four days. The recipe highlights using gluten-free oats rather than quick or instant oats to maintain the topping's structure and texture.

Ingredients

Servings

Apple Filling

  • 5 cups apple peeled and chopped
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Topping

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ¾ cup old fashioned oats gluten free
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour gluten free 1 to 1
  • 8 tbsp butter cut into cubes, cold unsalted
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. First, preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Butter an 8 inch square pan or spray with nonstick spray.
  2. In a large bowl, add cubed apples, sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice. Toss until apples are fully coated.
  3. Spread apples down into buttered pan.
  4. Then, make topping. Add all ingredients to a mixing bowl.
  5. Using your fingers, break up the cold butter and incorporate into the other ingredients. Mixture should be crumbly.
  6. Spread topping over the apple layer.
  7. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until bubbly and apples are fork tender.
  8. Finally, remove from oven. Serve!

Notes

  • Use a combination of apple varieties like Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, and Macintosh for balanced flavor and texture.
  • Choose gluten-free old-fashioned rolled oats instead of quick or instant oats to improve topping texture.
  • Mix the topping by hand using fingers to soften butter and create a crumbly consistency; uneven texture is expected.
  • Bake until topping is golden and apples are soft and bubbling for best results.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
