Grilled Lamb Burgers with Feta
Description
Grilled Lamb Burgers with Feta feature ground lamb blended with dried oregano, freshly chopped herbs including parsley, basil, and mint, as well as garlic cloves and lemon zest. A deseeded red jalapeño pepper adds gentle heat without overpowering. Crumbled feta cheese is incorporated into the mixture, contributing a creamy texture and a briny, tangy flavor contrast to the lamb.
The burgers are shaped gently to avoid compressing the meat, then grilled over high heat to develop a slightly charred exterior while keeping a juicy medium doneness inside. The fresh herbs and jalapeño cut through the richness of the lamb and cheese, offering a balanced and fragrant patty.
Serve these lamb burgers with a tabouli salad or your choice of fresh sides for a herby and flavorful meal. They provide a savory alternative to traditional beef burgers, lending a distinctive flavor profile from the feta and spices.
Wear gloves when handling jalapeño if preferred for ease and to avoid irritation. The recipe allows substitution of ground beef if desired, and different chili varieties can be used according to heat preference.
Ingredients
- 1 lb lamb See Note 1, ground
- 1 tsp oregano dried
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper cracked
- 1/4 cup flat leaf parsley (loosely filled)
- 10 mint leaf 1-2 inch, fresh
- 6 basil 4-5 inch, fresh leaves
- 1 jalapeno pepper See Note 2, red
- 4 garlic cloves
- 1 lemon
- 1 cup feta cheese crumbled
Instructions
- Using gloves (optional), cut red jalapeño pepper stem off and remove the seeds and set aside (See Note 2). In a medium sized bowl add the ground lamb (or beef) and the salt, pepper and oregano. Mix to combine.
- Place herbs, jalapeño pepper, garlic cloves and two to three 2-inch pieces of lemon zest (I used my vegetable peeler to strip off) in food processor. Pulse several times to break down and add to the seasoned ground lamb.
- To the mixing bowl add the feta cheese crumbles and gently work the ingredients together to mix thoroughly. Do not over mix and compress. Divide the lamb mixture into four portions and gently form into four patties. Set aside.
- Prep the grill to around 450°F and then clean and oil it so burgers do not stick. Grill for 3 minutes on the first side covered, flip and cook for 4 minutes covered, then back over for 1 minute more. I removed them from the grill and allowed them to rest for 10 minutes. Should be medium.
- Serve with tabouli salad and top with Tzatziki sauce if desired.
Notes
- Use gloves when preparing jalapeño to avoid skin irritation from capsaicin.
- You can substitute ground beef (80/20 blend) in place of ground lamb if preferred.
- If you like more heat, retain the white membrane in the jalapeño and chop it coarsely.
- Replace red jalapeño with Fresno chili or green jalapeño based on desired flavor and spice level.
