Grinch Balls

Grinch Balls are no-bake truffles made by blending Red Velvet Oreo cookie crumbs with softened cream cheese, then rolling into balls and chilling before dipping in melted light green candy melts. Optionally, they can be drizzled with additional candy melts and decorated with red candy hearts. These festive treats combine creamy, sweet, and chocolaty elements with a smooth candy coating.

Description

The recipe starts by finely crushing Red Velvet Oreo cookies, which are then mixed with softened cream cheese to form a smooth, moldable dough. This mixture is shaped into uniform balls and chilled to help them firm up, preventing them from breaking during dipping.

The chilled balls are dipped in melted light green candy melts, which coat the truffles in a thin, firm shell. Additional candy melt can be drizzled on top for decoration, and red candy hearts are used as festive garnishes to complete the look.

This confection uses popular cream cheese-based truffle techniques, adapting them for a distinctively colorful and holiday-themed treat. The candies can be customized with different Oreo flavors or colored sugars if desired.

The candy melts should be gently melted in a double boiler or microwave in short intervals to avoid seizing. The drizzle is optional; decorating immediately after dipping helps the toppings stick well.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 24.4 ounces Red Velvet Oreo cookie 2) 12.2 ounces packages (44 cookies
  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened to room temperature
  • 15 ounces Candy Melts light green color
  • candy hearts red

Instructions

  1. Line a large baking sheet with parchment.
  2. In a food processor, add the Oreo cookies and pulse a few times into fine crumbs. You can also use a blender or place them in a zip closure plastic baggie and crush them with a rolling pin.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, add the softened cream cheese and blend with an electric hand mixer on high speed until smooth.
  4. Add the Oreo crumbs and mix the two together well.
  5. Using a 1.5” cookie scoop, scoop the mixture and roll into smooth balls with your hands and place onto the prepared baking tray.
  6. Place the try in the refrigerator at least for at least 2 hours to chill before dipping so they hold their shape.
  7. Set aside ½ cup of the candy wafers to use for the drizzle after dipping if you'd like.
  8. In a double boiler, add the candy melts and heat over low heat, stirring often, until melted and smooth. Be very careful not to overheat or get any water into the candy or it may saize and be unusable.
  9. Then, using a fork or toothpick, dip each ball into the melted candy. Tap the fork on the edge of the pot to remove excess dripping candy and place it onto baking sheet.
  10. If you'd like to add the extra drizzle, you can drizzle any leftover melted candy with a spoon or knife over top of the balls. Or you can place the reserved ½ cup of candy melts into a microwave safe piping bag. Twist it tight to close and place it in the microwave and melt on a low setting (defrost setting) for 30 seconds. Then massage the bag until fully melted. Repeat for another 30 seconds if needed. (Again, be careful not to overheat it).
  11. Snip a small tip off the bag and drizzle over the coated balls and immediately top with a red candy heart before the drizzle sets.
  12. Place them back in the refrigerator to set completely.

Notes

  • Any regular stuffed Oreos work well; double or mega stuf versions can make the dough too wet.
  • Melt candy melts gently, either with a double boiler or in short microwave bursts to avoid seizing.
  • The candy drizzle is optional; placing a red heart directly on the dipped truffle immediately works well.
  • Green colored sugar or sprinkles can be added for extra decoration.
  • Red candy hearts may be found at major retailers or ordered online.
