Ground Beef Fajitas Recipe
Description
The Ground Beef Fajitas recipe starts by blending chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper to create a signature seasoning mix. Ground beef chuck is browned in a skillet and drained of fat before being combined with the seasoning and water to develop a flavorful, moist filling. Meanwhile, sliced green, red, and yellow bell peppers along with onion strips are sautéed quickly to maintain their crisp-tender texture.
Returning the beef to the skillet with vegetables allows flavors to meld while heating through. The dish is finished with freshly chopped cilantro and a squeeze of lime juice for bright acidity. The fajita-size flour tortillas are warmed in a skillet or microwave to make wrapping easy.
These fajitas can be served as-is or accompanied by favorite toppings such as shredded cheese, jalapeños, sour cream, salsa, guacamole, or pico de gallo, providing customization options to suit different tastes.
Ingredients
- 2 tsp chili powder $0.20
- 2 tsp cumin $0.20, ground
- 1 tsp smoked paprika $0.10
- 1 tsp garlic powder $0.10
- 1 tsp salt $0.03
- ½ tsp black pepper $0.08, freshly cracked
- 1 lb. ground beef chuck $5.99
- 3 Tbsp water $0.00
- 1 Tbsp neutral cooking oil $0.04, generic cooking oil
- 1 green bell pepper $0.86
- 1 red bell pepper $1.48
- 1 yellow bell pepper $1.48
- 1 onion $0.43, small yellow or white
- 2 Tbsp cilantro $0.12, freshly chopped
- 1 lime $0.25
- 8 flour tortillas $1.39, fajita size
Instructions
- Mix all of the spices for the fajita seasoning in a small bowl and set aside (chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, black pepper). Then slice the bell peppers and onion into thin strips and set them aside.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat and brown the ground beef chuck. Drain any excess fat.
- Once the beef has browned, add the prepared fajita seasoning and water. Stir and cook for 2-3 more minutes. Transfer the seasoned ground beef to a separate plate and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the cooking oil, sliced bell peppers and sliced onion. Sauté the vegetables for 3-4 minutes. Try not to over cook the veggies. They should be slightly tender, but still crisp.
- Now add back in the seasoned ground beef. Stir everything together and allow the ground beef to heat through. Finish with freshly chopped cilantro and a squeeze of lime juice. Serve with warmed fajita-size tortillas** and all your favorite toppings***. Enjoy!
Notes
- Use 80% lean ground beef chuck for balance of flavor and fat; leaner beef can be substituted based on budget.
- Heat tortillas in a dry skillet over medium-low heat for a few seconds each side or warm in the microwave according to package instructions.
- Customize fajitas with toppings like shredded cheese, fresh cilantro, lime juice, jalapeños, sour cream, salsa, guacamole, and pico de gallo for added flavor and texture.
