Ground Beef Gnocchi
Description
This recipe starts by browning lean ground beef with chopped onion until the meat is cooked through and the onion softens. Garlic and Italian seasoning are added for depth of flavor. Next, canned diced tomatoes with juices, chicken broth, and heavy cream are poured in, then uncooked potato gnocchi is stirred into the mixture.
Simmering the covered pan allows the gnocchi to cook directly in the sauce, absorbing flavors while softening. After removing the lid, cooking continues until the sauce thickens to the desired consistency. Parmesan cheese is then stirred in, melting into the sauce to add savory richness.
This simple one-pot meal balances meaty, creamy, and herbaceous notes. Since gnocchi does not require pre-cooking, the dish saves preparation time. Seasoning with salt and pepper can be adjusted before serving. Fresh basil stirred in at the end is a suggested variation adding bright herbal flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef lean
- 1/2 onion chopped, medium
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning or to taste
- 1 (14 ounce) can diced tomatoes with juices
- 1/3 cup chicken broth or beef broth
- 3/4 cup heavy cream aka whipping cream
- 1 pound potato gnocchi uncooked
- 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese freshly grated
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Brown the ground beef and onion in a skillet over medium-high heat for 7-10 minutes. If there's lots of excess fat, spoon most of it out.
- Stir in the garlic and Italian seasoning.
- Add the diced tomatoes, chicken broth, cream, and gnocchi to the pan, and give it a good stir. Once the sauce starts to bubble again, cover the pan and reduce the heat to medium. Cook for 5 minutes.
- Uncover the pan, stir it, and let it cook for another few minutes, or until the gnocchi has cooked through and is nice and soft and the sauce has thickened to your liking.
- Stir in the parmesan cheese and salt & pepper as needed. Serve immediately.
Notes
- The gnocchi cooks directly in the sauce; no pre-cooking needed.
- Adding fresh basil at the end freshens the dish with herbal brightness.
