Ground Beef Tacos
Description
The recipe begins by softening onions and jalapeños in oil, building a flavorful base. Ground beef is browned until no longer pink, then spiced with taco seasoning and simmered with tomato sauce and red salsa, allowing flavors to meld over 20 minutes. Tortillas are warmed in the microwave wrapped in a damp paper towel to maintain pliability.
Once assembled, the tacos offer a hearty, seasoned meat complemented by fresh, crisp toppings including shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, onions, shredded cheese, and guacamole, which add texture and balance to each bite. The method gives control over toppings and heat level, letting you customize the tacos to taste.
Common substitutions include using store-bought taco seasoning or swapping jalapeños for milder peppers. Corn or flour tortillas can be used, or low-carb alternatives like Bibb lettuce cups. Serving with Mexican sides like rice or slaw is common, and the recipe also pairs well with homemade chips and salsa.

Instructions
Taco Meat
- Cook The Vegetables. In a large skillet over medium heat, add oil. Then when the oil is hot, add the onions and jalapenos (or bell peppers) and cook for 5 minutes or until the vegetables are soft.
- Brown The Ground Beef. When the onions and peppers softened, add the ground beef and cook for 5 minutes or until the ground beef is brown and no longer pink.
- Season The Ground Beef. After the ground beef is browned, sprinkle the taco seasoning over the ground beef and stir. Pour the tomato sauce and salsa over the ground beef and cook for 20 minutes.
Tortillas
- Heat The Tortillas. Wrap the tortillas in a damp paper town and place on a microwave safe plate. Heat the tortillas for about 30 seconds until warm. Repeat if necessary.
Taco Toppings
- Gather The Taco Toppings. Place the taco toppings in separate bowls, if making a taco bar, to let guests add their own toppings, or just to make it easier for you to speed up the taco assembly.
- Assemble The Tacos. Hold the tortilla in one hand and with the other hand spoon taco meat into the tortilla.
- Add Taco Toppings. Add your favorite taco toppings, such as shredded lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. See the full list of suggested taco toppings in the blog post above.
Notes
- Store-bought taco seasoning can be used for convenience or make a homemade mix for more control over flavor.
- Green bell peppers may replace jalapeños for less spice, or omit peppers entirely to reduce heat.
- Choose corn or flour tortillas, or substitute with lettuce cups or crispy cheese shells for different textures or dietary preferences.
- Select toppings according to preference; common choices include shredded lettuce, tomatoes, onions, guacamole, sour cream, and cheese.
