Ground Beef Tacos
Description
This recipe starts by browning lean ground beef in olive oil, then incorporates Mexican spices such as chili powder, cumin, oregano, and garlic powder along with tomato paste and water to form a seasoned sauce coating the beef. The mixture simmers briefly until the sauce thickens, concentrating the flavors. Draining excess fat after browning keeps the filling from becoming greasy.
The ground beef mixture is served in warm tortillas, either corn or flour, and garnished with chopped lettuce, diced tomatoes, red onions, and a Mexican cheese blend or cheddar. These toppings add freshness and variation in texture, balancing the savory meat filling.
For storage, leftovers keep well in airtight containers for up to four days and reheat on the stovetop with added water to maintain moisture. The filling also freezes for up to three months when cooled and packaged properly. The recipe notes alternatives such as substituting tomato sauce for tomato paste and paprika for chili powder, adapting to ingredient availability.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound ground beef lean
- 2 teaspoons chili powder
- 2 teaspoons cumin
- ½ teaspoon oregano
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder

Notes
- Store leftovers in airtight containers for up to 4 days; reheat gently with a splash of water to keep meat moist.
- Freeze cooked taco meat in freezer-safe containers or bags for up to 3 months; cool completely before freezing.
- Substitute tomato sauce in place of tomato paste and water if preferred.
- Use paprika as a milder alternative to chili powder if desired.
